San Diego police still searching for suspect in homeless killing spree

Police released a man arrested last week and are searching for anyone
connected to a spree of stabbings and burnings that killed three men
and wounded another

A man arrested last week on suspicion of waging a murderous campaign against San Diego’s homeless population has been released, suggesting that a serial killer could still be on the loose.

San Diego’s police department announced on Monday it had released Anthony Alexander Padgett, who was detained last Friday in connection to a grisly spree of stabbings and burnings that killed three men and wounded another.

“Captain Dave Nisleit will hold a press conference this afternoon to announce the release of Anthony Alexander Padgett and discuss the status of the investigation into the attacks on San Diego’s homeless,” a press statement said. “We need the public’s assistance to provide additional tips and leads to help us solve these crimes.”

The revelation will renew fear among San Diego’s sizeable homeless community and raise embarrassing questions for authorities about last week’s manhunt, the biggest in recent memory.
