Another thought about the email case

Ever since the investigation into Secretary Clinton's use of private email servers began, I've wondered about what was going on in the background. Everyone from the president on down was involved or affected by the story and since these people all know one another, there were likely interactions between them.

The chain of events leading to yesterday's announcement by FBI Director Comey had a curious set of twists. Considering that the story involves the woman who will likely be our next president, this investigation was far more weighty than it otherwise might have been. The results of the investigation could throw the election into chaos.

Once former President Clinton had created controversy by socializing with Attorney General Lynch, she had to remove herself from the hierarchy of decision making in the case. After so many months of official silence, suddenly the pace of activity picked up. Mr. Comey's presentation was remarkable for all the reasons he said and more. The FBI rarely, if ever, makes a public statement clearing a subject of its investigation. Because of the politics involved, he had to make the statement even though it was clear that he didn't enjoy the exercise. I believe he was disappointed he couldn't announce that charges were pending and that's why he scolded Secretary Clinton- it was all he had.

Since General Lynch couldn't make the presentation, it's curious that the task fell to Director Comey, a Republican. As others have speculated, if Bill Clinton engineered this chain of events, it was masterful. Having someone from the opposition clear her was as great a turn of events as having Congressman Gowdy's investigation come up empty-handed weeks before.

I'm not certain that's how things really happened but, boy, would I love to hear the conversations between all of these people. Did General Lynch order Director Comey to make a public statement? He said no one else knew what he was going to say so I'll believe him on that. But did the president and/or Senator Warren know where the investigation was heading? It could have been politically disastrous for them to campaign with Secretary Clinton if she was then indicted. What information were the Clintons privy to?

It's a fascinating tale and I'm confident that there's quite a bit more that'll come out when the principles write their books.
