A Louisiana district attorney said on Friday he has no intention of charging a 30-year-old mother arrested for whipping her three boys after she found out they had burglarized a neighbor's house.
Schaquana Spears was arrested June 20 in Baton Rouge and charged with two counts of cruelty to juveniles felony charges.
A sheriff's report said she allegedly whipped her 13, 12 and 10-year-old boys. The report said lacerations on the 13-year-old's arms had bled and lacerations broke the skin on the 12-year-old's arm. The report said the 10-year-old was whipped too, but much less than his brothers.
But East Baton Rouge Parish District Attorney Hillar Moore III told The Advocate (http://bit.ly/298OaNl), "At this time I have no intention to prosecute. It would take something significant to change my opinion."

Citing the states cruelty to juveniles law that requires proof of a childs unjustifiable pain or suffering, East Baton Rouge Parishs chief prosecutor said Friday he doesnt intend to prosecute a Baton Rouge woman arrested last week for whipping three of her sons because they broke into a neighbors home and stole items.
At this time I have no intention to prosecute, District Attorney Hillar Moore III said of Schaquana Evita Spears. It would take something significant to change my opinion.
Spears, a 30-year-old single mother of six children, was arrested on counts of cruelty to juveniles after she admitted striking three of her boys with a cord.
It doesnt fit unjustifiable pain or suffering, Moore said of Spears actions.

(111,456 posts)These are things that get black kids sent to prison for many, many years. These are things that get them shot by the cops.
I think this mom just LOST IT. Given that much provocation, any of us might do the same.
She very likely regretted it five minutes after she did it when the welts showed up. I'm glad there are no charges being filed. I sincerely hope those kids don't do this shit again. I hope the mom can get through to them what the risks out there are for black kids who get into even the mildest of trouble--and this was serious.

If they would've been shot then everyone would be looking for the parents and why they didn't raise the boys correctly

(2,550 posts)Through beating is not going to solve her problem. It shows the mom has low coping skills and the fact that all three of them were involved means this family needs help.
I hope CPS steps in and grants Family Based Social Services to help with parenting classes, therapy and if the mom qualifies for any assistance, they help her attain them. --not removal of children, unless the situation warrants-- if the children are burglarizing homes and getting beaten to blood, there's a family problem here.
Burglarizing a house can get any child or adult locked up for years regardless of race. I'm not going to turn my portion of this conversation into race.
I don't think jail helps many people, they really just need stability.

(111,456 posts)thanks to the low priority of the needs of the people in this country.
I agree about the coping skills and the kids heading for real problems. That's why I hope she's able to get through to them and I'm glad the authorities didn't pursue this one with charges against her.

(9,527 posts)Yes obviously she should have handled the situation better, but we as a society need to put parents (single or partnered) in a better position to succeed. We don't have quality after school programs in many poor and/or minority areas. We don't have enough ways for kids to be kept busy doing something productive (whether that's educational learning, learning art/music, sports, life skills like basic car maintenance or sewing/cooking skills, etc).
CPS isn't going to help by taking these kids and sticking them in the system. We should put CPS in a situation where these sort of kids get help before this.
Equally obviously beating her kids with a switch isn't the right choice. But I don't believe we as a society put her in a position to succeed either.

(2,550 posts)Does not remove the children, family based social services in CPS gives access to resources such as parenting classes, therapy, evaluations.
I am not going to blame society on this one. I'm also not going to hindsight the mothers decision making in family decisions.
I'm just hoping somebody intervenes because these children likely have a very very low chance of success and I'm hoping the light national attention can possibly get intervention.

These days taking away internet is much much much worse than any kind of whipping to teenagers...
They would've screamed bloody murder

(90,371 posts)We were near feral but it was a military base so people had an unusual sense of safety when it comes to kids.
As long as we were home and bikes put up before dark the sky was the limit (well on the base except for the weapons areas) were we could go
