Dear Member of the House and former colleagues:

There is nowhere I would rather be right now than with you – on the floor of the People’s House, representing </span>Southern Arizona, fighting for our country, and working to make our communities safer. But your action is the balm for my regret – and it is the inspiration for my continued commitment.

Fighting gun violence takes great courage. I’ve seen great courage when my life was on the line. I see great courage in many of you right now.

Americans are grappling with a gun violence crisis. It is a crisis that tears apart the lives of so many Americans and touches every community. It is both public and private. In our homes and on our streets. At work, at church, at the movies, at a dance club, at school and at school again, at a Congress on Your Corner. The victims are young and old – but always with so much life ahead of them. They are white and black, Latino and Asian, and Native American. They are lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgendered, queer, and straight. They Christian are Muslim, Jewish and Sikh. They are veterans and government workers and union members. They are rich and poor. They die by murder, they die by suicide, and they die by negligence. Often, they don’t die, but they carry the scars, and their lives change forever.

If gun violence affects all of us Americans, then the solution is not up to just some of us. We are all responsible for our safety today and for the country we pass on to our children tomorrow. It’s what makes us a country. Where our country has already come together – behind the simple proposition that we ought to have laws that keep guns out of the hands of dangerous people – so must our Congress. And they should not waste another minute.

We must not accept the world that will be the product of inaction in Washington. We can do better. Some states have already made progress – they show us that when we put aside our incidental or momentary differences and stand shoulder to shoulder, we have enormous power.

It’s been said that hope was forged of two powerful ingredients: anger at how things are, and the courage to change them. We will not be driven backwards to live in isolation from one another and in fear of violence. Thanks to you – and millions of Americans who share our values of pluralism, liberty, and responsibility – we will stand strong and work toward a safer nation for all of us.

Speaking is difficult for me. But I haven’t been silenced. And neither should the American people. Their Representatives must vote to prevent gun violence.

Sincerely,

Gabrielle Giffords

Looks as though Paul Ryan is about to find himself on a sticky wicket. As per NBC News, if members do not leave the floor and no compromise is reached, it is largely up to Speaker Paul Ryan to decide whether to use the authority of the House to seek to clear the floor and/or sanction members, or to keep the House in recess and wait out the issue. It's a lose/lose situation for him media-, editorial- and opinion-wise.

Maybe I'm just old, but he doesn't seem to possess the level of maturity that we've come to expect from national figures.

That whole 'wearing his baseball cap backwards' while he was in the weight room lifting 'photo op' demonstrates just what a joke he is. Then there was the smart phone video of him pretending to help out in the soup kitchen.

I don't know what anyone sees on him.

The job of our Congress people is to pass laws. That is how they can try to reduce the violence.

Haven't you had enough of the Republicans who don't stay in Washington to get anything done? Why should Democratic Congress people goof off like the Republicans.

Wed Jun 22, 2016, 05:50 PM
Jun 2016

is social media. Obviously in other, less dramatic ways, but in our case..."The word can go around the world before the Republicans can get their pants on."

The people now have a weapon far greater than "just one vote". First we had the internet and found it possible to communicate globally in an instant. Then AOL and the other ISPs...news changed. They tried to control the internet...failed.

I felt it when the cell phones got video...changed law enforcement and continues to do so. They tried to make taking video of LEos illegal...not happening

Now Twitter and Facebook. No way anyone can shut that down.

Alexander Graham Bell is proudly clapping in his grave.

I'm another of those proud Democrats...we're doing it !!!!!!! And yes, it is YUUUUUUGE.

(One thing The Donald did was give us an extra descriptive word...LOL)

99. The NRA compares the sit-in to criminals and terrorists

wtf?????

http://mediamatters.org/blog/2016/06/22/nra-radio-show-compares-participants-rep-john-lewis-gun-violence-sit-criminals-and-terrorists/211122
<snip>

The National Rifle Association’s radio show compared participants in a sit-in in the U.S. House of Representatives being led by Rep. John Lewis (D-GA) to “criminals and terrorists” reasoning that like terrorists, the sit-in participants were not following the rules.

While the House was in session on June 22, Lewis and other Democratic members of Congress sat on the floor of the House, refusing to return to regular order until Speaker of the House Paul Ryan (R-WI) agreed to call a vote on legislation to prevent gun violence.

CNN.com described the move as “a dramatic protest inside the House of Representatives” that was “rich with historic symbolism.” Lewis, who as chairman of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee organized numerous sit-ins to protest racial discrimination during the 1960s, has been described as “one of the most courageous persons the Civil Rights Movement ever produced.”

During the June 22 broadcast of the NRA’s radio show Cam & Company, as the sit-in proceeded, host Cam Edwards claimed, “So in order to push legislation that the sponsors say would not have prevented the attacks in Orlando, Florida, they’re also going to flout the House rules. Kind of like, you know, criminals and terrorists flout the rules that we have in place right now and will continue to do so?”:

They need to look into the mirror to see the true criminals and terrorists. When it becomes unsafe to go to the grocery store, bank, workplace, parks etc., it is clear that unregulated access to firearms are tearing our country apart. We have become a completely dysfunctional country.

110. Rep Nolan of rural Minnesota on fire about ducks having more rights than human. Excellent!

Rural area, everybody's got hunting rifles -- says he never ate beef or chicken until he was grown, because they all hunted for the table. It was a firey speech. He got onto the ducks because hunting rifles -- um, you only get 3 shells.

So, Rep Nolan says, Ducks have more rights than little children in school, people in a movie theater, people out for a nice evening. He enumerated and enumerated, and I tell you those ducks got a damn good going over.

I am SO proud to be a Democrat today.

I just had enough. IT was amazing but I live too close to not have gone there to be a part and show support. After dinner, we hopped in the truck and drove over the river to join in with the others outside the house.

I almost walked into Nancy Pelosi as she came outside (along with Eleanor Holes Norton, DWS, Keith Ellison, Hank Johnson, Emmanuel Cleaver, and many others)

Sadly, there was no major media coverage of this but it important because they came out to talk to the groups of people gathered outside,

It was really inspiring.

I was interviewed by a reporter from Voice of America as well!

154. It's not huge, it's political theatre...
Thu Jun 23, 2016, 01:20 AM
Jun 2016

I understand many here will think it's huge because, let's be honest, the Democratic Party has been spineless for a long time, and they want their representatives to stand for something, so they'll grasp at anything.

This just reinforces the spineless strategy of the Democratic Party. Nothing the Democrats are doing with this sit in will influence gun deaths, none of this will impact the election or change people's minds, this sit in doesn't address the systemic problems that cause gun violence, none of the proposed legislation did, and some of it would be deemed unconstitutional based on the current insane interpretation of the 2nd Amendment. And that they are acting now when there are so many other completely fucked up systemic issues that they've never addressed, in many cases have capitulated to completely, just shows how spineless they are.

Expect the electorate to not even remember this in a couple weeks. When you consistently ignore systemic issues in governance, the people will rightly assume your "stands" are for show.

Part of how the NRA gets away with this shit are larger systemic issues that no one is addressing. Wake me when Congress people address the root of the problem.
