to buy a Big Mac or anything else. This is part of the problems the next administration will be dealing with by 2020.

(10,005 posts)with atm's and vendors are tired of giving the banks a percent to use a debit or credit card.

(1,166 posts)lot of people have not the first clue as to what this means for the future of human autonomy. (I also doubt that more than a few people have spent even two minutes thinking about the implications of "bail ins" and negative interest rates. Ignorance is bliss, I guess - until it isn't.)

And there is no doubt that a lot of people will not understand the implications of having Uncle Sam decide if you can buy toothpaste or beer.
But most people will.
And finally, there are a lot of very powerful people who could not engage in the activities that they do under such a scheme.
I truly believe that if the gov't tries this the country will turn into the mother of all black markets.

(6,342 posts)Some businesses won't even accept cash anymore. Most hotels now demand a debit or credit card.
Many people don't carry around as much cash as they used to.
I don't think a fully cashless society will happen any time soon. But I think people are using cash less and less. And that trend will continue. It also becomes a matter of convenience. It's easier to swipe a card than fumble around in a wallet or purse looking for the right bills.

(34,845 posts)I write 2 checks a month -to my ex and to my mother. Everything else is paid electronically. I've had the same $15 or so in my wallet, sometimes for months at a time.

(5,815 posts)I never carry cash unless going to a cash-only bar. I write two checks a month - rent and health insurance.
Otherwise, everything is electronically automated.
All my friends use Venmo to pay each other.
