In fact, most scalping of dead bodies began occurring after the US Federal Government, States and territories placed a bounty on the heads of Native Americans. To prove they killed a Native (of either sex) and collect the bounty, White settlers were forced to scalp their victims. Extremely dark hair was distinctive. I wonder if some Latinos were murdered for their hair? Buffaloes - a primary food source of Native Americans, in the West - were slaughtered by the millions, after their hair became popular apparel.
