Between their example and Democratic Congresses, Republicans were scared they had to be liberal or never see the Oval Office again. (Remember who Republicans were before FDR--Hoover.)
Also, a platform is a nonbinding thing and is usually far better than actual performance, both the Democratic platform and the Republican platform.

(1,683 posts)during the FDR and Truman administrations. It was in 1954 that Democrats got a lock on the house that lasted till 1994. The Senate was controlled by the Republicans briefly during the Reagan administration.

Second Labor Unions were very strong and most of these platforms are from the Unions.
As to refugees I can guarantee you that they were not talking about from Mexico. At the time we were involved in some issues with the USSR and there were refugees that were coming to the USA from that conflict. It was not about race. Most of them were white.
