So I've had quite the post racial day [View all]

I woke with a troll demanding an apology to white men on du on my private email address

Followed by a demand to delete a thread of mine with my phone number attached. Which I complied with because I didn't want crazy crank calls.

Then I received this message 'In future though, don't fuck with white men. Don't post anything negative about white men. Don't talk about white privilege, because there's no such
thing as white privilege. The bullshit and hate speech that white men have
to listen to on DU will no longer be tolerated. Things are going to
change. You can warn the rest too, because they're no longer anonymous
either.'

So I'm thinking we should have a conversation about the level of privilege you have in society where you feel entitled to stalk someone and then instruct them about what they can and cannot discuss publicly

All of you who deny race in multiple aspects of life, whether it be the fact that the large number of trolls on the internet are white men who stalk women and minorities, who deny the existence of discrimination in police practices and hiring, who deny the importance of the black vote, create a climate that allows this to occur in.

The next time you deny the existence of white privilege or male privilege, remember you side with the fucking trolls of the world. Congratulations to you.

1. Many people use the same username for other forums and places - information may be obtained through profiles or sloppy coding from websites very easily. You can copy a complete website if it doesn't have security to stop it, which will include any information at one time an individual may have put there

2. Linking to places like facebook, can be reversed tracked. If someone has liked a thread and there is also a link to facebook for example, this link can be traced. Type in google search key words with the thread title, and find it linked to facebook. &quot Facebook name) linked this thread from Demogratic Underground". Then go look up the profile on facebook and find all sorts of connections, profile information etc

3. Sometimes its about the stalker looking at all the above information and trying to find someone they can identify with their personal information. Then making out as though they had specifically tracked them, rather than cast their net randomly hoping for a 'bite'.

4. The odds are high that the individual has a number of personal flaws, significant ones including social isolation, mental/emotional health issues and the learning of a few 'tricks' of this nature in some way assuages their angst.

5. Never put personal information online that you don't mind someone seeing or having access to regardless of how safe you think it is. NO bank info, addresses, phone numbers, children's names, nada. Online presence is fake. If possible use fake info, confusing and sometimes contradictory information here and there - i.e if you are a woman, create a profile with a stock image of a man on multiple forums whether you use them or not. Create a fake facebook account and use that to post to forums where an account is necessary and you don't want to use your own. Be creative.

6. Finally - there are many users here who have been here for years and years. They have made online friends with other users and within the confines of the forum, there is nothing wrong with that. However, these are not real friends, it should go without saying that they still could be anybody; you have not vetted them with your eyes, yours ears and your physical senses as you would do face to face. That means regardless of how comfortable you may be, do not share personal information with anyone online.

Sometimes race and misogyny is imagined and pumped up in posts that dare to step back and try to view it unemotionally from the outside (a hard thing to do) or even in some where it... isn't there.

Kidding aside, yeah, it's pretty easy to discount something that one rarely encounters personally or that isn't an ingrained part of one's daily existence. I think it's worse when the outrage or lack thereof is only selective, as often seems to be the case. Death threats and misogynistic taunts are fine if the targets are supporters of the candidate I don't like. Like that should make any difference.

In prep school, one guy of the "Hunting Club" thought it would be cute to shoot at me...over my head. So I went to the Head Master and told him about it... he said "they were just teasing". So you see pointing a gun at me and shooting live ammo was just teasing.... in high school.

A threatening e-mail, that may or may not exist, doesn't bother me too much.

Public people often get nasty mail and phone calls, especially politicians who do something stupid like Lange did. That almost never results in actual attacks. It's usually all bluff, although it can still be frightening to the receiver. Obama has had so many threats, I'm sure, but he knows it comes with the territory. At least he has people to follow through on the ones that seem like they might be real. But private people getting threats is scarier, because it means a stalker is watching them...and that has too often ended up with real life results. In most cases, it's still just bluff, but private people don't have a security team to protect them from the potential real threats.

A bit of my own personal experience. I'm a gay white male in an interracial relationship of 20 years this past New Years eve.

I was much younger when my husband and I met. I was more idealistic. I fully and absolutely believed that I was a man of equal opportunity. I abhorred racism. I also absolutely believed, and vehemently asserted that I was in no way shape or form a racist.

I still vividly recall the first conversation my boyfriend (at the time) had our first real discussion about racism. We were watching the television series Designing Women. There was an episode where one of the ladies in the series daughter was dating a fellow student in her class who was black. The mother was okay with it, the father however had issue with it. Without recapping the whole episode, towards the end there was a line that really struck me that basically said "everyone is racist, the question is, what are you going to do about it." I thought it was a ridiculous notion that everyone is a racist.. certainly I wasn't.. I couldn't be.. Here I was sitting with my boyfriend who was of a different race than I was and I had no issue with it. Again, I could go on a VERY long digression here of that particular conversation, but suffice it to say.. he proved me wrong. Oh, for certain I wasn't a KKK or white supremacist type of racist.. but I did live with preconceived notions that proved the point.

Fast forward 14 years into our relationship. I relocated down to Rio Di Janeiro, Brazil for work, and my husband relocated with me. One evening, after coming home from work, I was commenting to him about how scary the police force was in that city. They are so corrupt, and the general notion in my office is that it's better to be robbed by an honest criminal than to be robbed by the police.. it was safer. To this he laughed (as an aside he has one of the Greatest and most infectious laughs of anyone in the world that I've ever met.. but again I digress).. He pointed out to me that I'd just had my first real view of what white privilege in the US is. See, in the US, I've never known what it's like to actually FEAR an engagement with law enforcement. If I get pulled over for speeding, there's no voice in my head wondering if I'm going to die from this. In Brazil, I learned what it was like to fear law enforcement.. to feel that I can't really go to them with my problems without taking on additional risk to myself.

I'm sure as the population becomes more 'brown' for a lack of a better term, the government will reflect the changes. I looked at Minnesota's voting percentages by race and found that there were at most 2/3 eligible voters voting from all subgroup. Asians had the lowest turnout reading the information I found. Even with Minnesota's high turnout, minorities don't have the population base to make immediate change.

The power structure in this country is definitely white. But these white people maintain authority through the social and political systems that keep us all down, including many old white guys like myself.

So it appears that working to build inclusive communities, funding education and voter turnout are the keys to enacting change.

Pointing fingers, regardless the ethnicity, is a complete waste of time.
