Trey Gowdy Admits Faking Clinton Emails To Make Her Look Guilty
Trey Gowdy (R-S.C.) admitted he faked evidence to portray former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton as guilty of breaking the law, according to Occupy Democrats. Democratic leaders and the American public are calling on the Benghazi Committee to give back taxpayer money funding it, and to end the committees partisan charades.
Rep. Gowdy admitted his actions, but only did so after the CIA outed his egregious lapse in judgement and procedure to both sides of the House, and only after Rep. Elijah Cummings (D-Mar.) called Rep. Gowdy out in a letter.
This revelation was the last partisan straw that broke the supposedly non-partisan Benghazi Select Committees back.
Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) and other Democratic leaders sent a letter to Republican National Committee Chairman, Reince Priebus to demand that they and the GOP give back the $4.7 million in taxpayer money the Benghazi Select Committee has spent, according to Roll Call.
Democratic leaders demand the GOP disband the Benghazi Committee and stop using it as a Clinton opposition machine, to raise money for GOP presidential candidates donations resulting from lies.

I imagine this is what passes for "substantiation".

(62,444 posts)I believe the request was for substantiation of that headline, and the further statement that Trey Gowdy made such an admission.
Maybe a definition of "admits" is in order, but a letter from Rep. Cummings to Trey Gowdy is not an admission by Trey Gowdy.
An "admission" is when someone themselves makes a statement. Not when someone else accuses them of something, not when some unsourced story claims someone made such a statement, but when the person says something that acts as an admission.
Is there a quote - from Trey Gowdy - stating that he faked Clinton emails to make her look guilty? Yes or no.

(65,616 posts)'Rep. Gowdy wrote a response admitting he falsified Secretary Clintons documents. He added that yes, he presented the fake documents as evidence of Secretary Clintons alleged guilt, but then went a step further to write that he would continue to alter documents as he sees fit.'
What more do you two want?
jberryhill
(62,444 posts)If I were to introduce that as an "admission" in a proceeding, I'd get a good round of laughs.
Rex
(65,616 posts)Maybe someone can find the letter, that is not a quote but the same as admitting to it.
jberryhill
(62,444 posts)But judging their veracity on the basis of what I want to believe on the basis of a third hand account of what someone says they were told about what someone else said, is frequently unproductive.
In the course of dealing with disputes every danged day of my life, I frequently find that two people can read the same thing, and come away with completely different impressions of what it means.
The headline of this thread is "Why isn't Trey Gowdy being prosecuted for fraud". Perhaps the answer to that question lies on the lack of anything thus far which is an admission by Trey Gowdy of faking the emails. Not what someone says he said, but what he actually did say.
Rex
(65,616 posts)I would be happy with some material evidence. I don't have to have a quote, but the letter would be nice to read. As far as syntax and grammatical errors, journalism ain't what it was at one time. Proofreading is a lost art.

(62,444 posts)But Cumming does not say that "Trey Gowdy admitted" faking the emails.
Before you call Cumming a liar, perhaps you might point out what statement of Cummings is supposed to be a lie.

(62,444 posts)I don't understand the point, though.
But I'm gathering there is no actual admission by Gowdy to be found.
Here's the thing - Gowdy is full of shit and we all know it. That does not mean that any assertion about Gowdy is true.
And this is how these things go on DU:
"Gowdy was found taking selfies while fucking a goat!"
"Where are the pictures?"
"Someone said there are pictures! Why are you defending Gowdy!"
The headling "Gowdy Admits Faking Emails" would be a great headline if it were supported by a quote of Gowdy making such an admission. It's kind of the definition of "to admit" something. Absent an admission by Gowdy, then the headline is difficult to understand.
Having read the article, not seen an admission by Gowdy, and then looked at other linked stuff to it, then it's hard not to feel that I was suckered into a snipe hunt by a false headline.

(14,556 posts)Gowdy's claim was Clinton was sending e-mails with classified info, to and from Sidney Blumenthal. The CIA released those emails to the Benghazi committee, without any redactions. Gowdy then redacted the info himself, implying that the CIA made those redactions. He then presented the emails to the GOP press machine saying that the info behind the redactions was sensitive info. The GOP press machine ran with headlines like "Clinton burned Libyan spy" He also implied this was just the beginning of what their investigation would reveal.
portion of Gowdy's letter
Newsweek reported in OCt
The CIA reviewed the material in question and informed State that it required no redactions, the agency informed Susan Sachsman Grooms, staff director and general counsel for the panels Democrats, on October 17.
His response:

Our Committee has access to career civil servants, former federal prosecutors, former intelligence experts as well as military experts who are uniquely well suited to gauge intelligence information and how it should be handled. Although the Executive Branch is ultimately responsible for classification, we remain concerned with the naming of sources and methods and will continue to protect that information now and going forward where it is readily apparent to us. As such, we will continue to redact certain information to protect sensitive information regardless of how others treat that information
Well you know those GOPers, pillars of truth.

"Gowdy Admits Faking Emails" is the headline. Where is this admission by Gowdy and what did he say?

On 27 September 2012, U.S. federal authorities stated that Nakoula had been arrested in Los Angeles and charged violating terms of his probation. Prosecutors stated that some of the violations included making false statements regarding his role in the film and his use of the alias "Sam Bacile".[5]
On 7 November 2012, Nakoula pleaded guilty to four of the charges against him and was sentenced to one year in prison and four years of supervised release.[14][15]

(2,062 posts)Because government officials are all above the law while in office. Think about it, we elect these people and do NOTHING about their behavior. What is our recourse? voting... yeah so, how do you vote out someone who has been in the senate for 40 years and just says enough bs to convince enough voters to put him back in. I think as voters we must demand term limits, and demand that all elected officials have the same rights as the voting citizens nothing more or less.... they need to get their own healthcare, drive pay for parking, etc....

(1,792 posts)I would LOVE to see this jerk (Trey) thrown in jail. But the accusations that were levied against him by Cummings were that he didn't check his facts before sending that letter. Not that he admitted to changing the docs. It was Kevin McCarty who mentioned something about changing docs in a tweet.
In court, you cant assume a crime from someone else' tweets. Nothing would stick. We need to get the facts out and have actual reliable evidence.

(62,444 posts)The factual assertion here is "Trey Gowdy Admitted Faking Emails".
When did he make this admission, to whom, and what did he say?
And just to be clear, I am assuming we all understand what it means to "admit" something, yes? An admission is a statement by a person to something that person has done.
So, yes by all means, let's discuss the facts.

(2,902 posts)The media has been covering this for months.
jberryhill
(62,444 posts)Is it that hard to quote from the letter?
What the media has been covering for months is the accumulation of various evidence that Gowdy faked it.
This is the first time I have seen "Gowdy Admits" faking it.
That would be interesting if true.
Once again, an admission is a statement made by a person, it is not a statement made by some other person about what the person in question said. Since this is in writing, then what did Gowdy say?
How hard is that?
He sent a letter saying, "Dear Rep. Cummings, I faked the email. Love, Trey"?

(30 posts)Well this is my first official post, I've been lurking for years but came out the closet to hang on the porch w/the big dogs for this one.
I too have been trying to find proof of this for quite some time. I can't find a quote where he actually admits committing a crime (which would be very stupid).
Thus far, this seems to be a rumor that has been posted on blogs etc as fact..as much as I loathe this parasite with the heat of a thousand suns.. its about the truth.
From what I can tell he's only been 'accused' of altering documents. I've been Googeling, Binging this for mths (this has been circulating since last year) but can't find this on a reliable news outlet.
