Fear of a violent convention

This discussion thread was locked as off-topic by LostOne4Ever (a host of the General Discussion forum).

In 1968, the Democratic convention was a chaotic free-for-all. There was violence in the streets, and some pushing and shoving on the convention floor. Our party leadership seems worried that Sanders supporters might attend the convention with the intent to "start something." This is why the chair throwing, or non chair throwing, is such a big deal right now. The DNC wants everything to go smoothly, but it doesn't seem likely. There are going to be some people very, very upset about Clinton getting the nomination, and handling dissent and protest isn't something our party leaders enjoy. So far, they have shown little interest in hearing the criticisms, not just from Sanders supporters now, but from unhappy Democrats over the past 30 years. If all the pent-up frustration boils over at the convention, we could have a replay of 1968.

If anything they seem to be provoking a reaction. I think they want something to happen so they can pretend the half the party that is rejecting them are just crazy fringy lefties who can be safely ignored and must be put down.

to legally protest and the police become aggressive despite the right to assemble. That is what happened in 68. It was not delegates or even protesters who started the "riots" it was the police and there lovely mayor dailey.

What could very easily start a problem at the DNC is the unequal treatment of the candidates by the officials.

Like refusing to put any Bernie supporters on the rules committee or the platform committee?

Like refusing to seat delegates.

Like calling for last minute changes in the rules and then taking a voice vote in a group that has an equal number of both sides to decide the results. Like calling it for the "inevitable" candidate.

Like using super-delegates to over ride the voters.

Cheating in a race is worse than protesting a decision. It is the choice of the DNC what kind of convention we are going to have. They need to decide soon.

Maybe all our delegates will just stand up and walk out. What are they going to do then?

Let them go ahead and get themselves arrested, hauled off and pay fines.
They will take any "revolution" they were thinking of having back decades.

The absolute best way to shut people's ears to what you want them to hear and seriously consider so badly is to behave like these supporters.
It's a bad idea to allow a small portion of arrogant dolts for Bernie force the party anywhere. I need only point to the Tea Party and the GOP as an example of why.
