I 100% believe transgendered people should be able to use the bathroom with the gender they identify with. However, more and more, I keep seeing articles like this that say sex-segregated bathrooms are obsolete, and try to make a pseudo-academic gender-studies-ish case for that idea. I am aware of the difference between sex and gender.
However, there comes a point where men and women do not want to hear and smell each other do their business. There comes a point where some progressives start trying to take things too far and make mainstream Democrats and progressives look like kooks. If we can let transgendered people use the bathroom they've transitioned to, then let the vast majority of people, cisgendered, also keep their bathrooms.

(115,681 posts)also don't care what gender they are.
And in places where there is only 1 toilet in the room? Make them unisex.
People now use unisex "family" restrooms and don't care if who was there before them. Make them universal unisex.

(2,707 posts)but one of the reasons we should not eliminate generally sex-segregated bathrooms is the danger of men going into womens' rooms and robbing and sexually assaulting them. Especially since people don't want cameras in bathrooms, it would be easy for perps to get away with it.

Women changing clothes in the stalls is common enough now; women change clothes outside of the stall sometimes too though most women don't do that. I've never seen someone change a colostomy bag in the public area but perhaps that's different in men's rooms with less privacy.
It's rare that any discussion of this topic mentions men being uncomfortable sharing restrooms even though some are. Most of the objections to coed bathrooms come down to the presumption that men can't help themselves and other ignorant social prohibitions.

(14,449 posts)I've gone into many mall men's bathrooms and the urnals were all taken. The toilets were missed by someone. Thank goodness I only had to go number 1.

(30,884 posts)How do people keep there unisex bathrooms clean at home?

(14,449 posts)At home is quite a different situation with 4 maybe 6 people instead of thousands.

(24,454 posts)A "biological male" without any intention of even presenting female could be considered Transgender though I don't know many biological Cis-males whom would claim to be Trans just to get into the ladies restroom. Also, the individual reported in this article could well have been Trans. Unless a Trans women has had permanent hair removal, facial hair growth, unfortunately continues to occur.

(49,212 posts)Surgery is expensive (like paying out of pocket for a new luxury car kind of money,) almost never covered by insurance, and in the case of trans men the results are not particularly functional.
And of course some people can't have it because they are medically ineligible, want to have biological children, or simply don't want it. And even in ideal circumstances getting approved and getting surgery is usually a years-long process.
Major surgery can not be a minimum standard to attain one's rights.

(49,212 posts)I know trans women use the same bathroom I do. IDGAF. They're far safer in the women's room than in male dominated spaces, and they're no threat to me.
If you want to make me safer in the bathroom get somebody to refill the soap, TP and ass gaskets a bit more frequently. Thanks!
