(82,849 posts)But in all the mania to have guns in every public building and across every square inch of the land, the student may not have broken any laws (which we don't need anyway, because criminals don't obey the laws, and law-abiding gun owners never break the law, and FREEDOM) by possessing and carrying a loaded weapon on school grounds, in spite of his negligence or recklessness.

but a high school student who has been charged as an adult for several gun crimes as a result.
"Greenville County Sheriff's Lt. James Beaver says a 17-year-old student at Southside High School has been charged as an adult with unlawful carrying of a pistol, disturbing schools and carrying weapons on school property.
Beaver says another student who was shot when the gun went off will face the same charges as a juvenile when he's released from the hospital after treatment for injuries that were not life-threatening."
"Braylin D'Andre Scott, 17, was charged with unlawful carrying of a pistol, disturbing schools, and carrying a weapon on school property."

I figured the usual script would be followed: The sheriff would come out, cluck sympathetically, and tell everyone how unfortunate the whole incident was, acknowledge the justifiable distress and anger of the community, but conclude that no one could be charged because no laws were broken.

I'm not clear from the ABC story how many students had weapons at Southside High, but it seems that at least two of them did.
