(15,235 posts)As species vanish at an alarming rate, surpassing the Chicxulub Event, when dinosaurs finally became extinct, humans are on the evolutionary chopping block this time. Oxygen to clean water ratios are changing on a planetary scale. Eventually, crops and livestock will pay a toll during Climate Change.

(22,904 posts)I remember years ago reading about the Florida Panther and how its habitat was being destroyed, etc. Made me very sad.

(24,745 posts)that are dying off because of US--------------------it is that simple. We the human race are really stupid, we think we know everything, but we don't realize, that bee, is what gives us what we need to eat
I am currently reading an article in Mother Jones, how a couple called Resnik in California and what they are basically doing to the water supply in the state is pretty amazing.
When I lived out there every year you had the opportunity if you wanted to, you could go out smelting, not any more because of what is happening to the diversion of water, and to the smelt, and how this one couple who own and market out of there "empire" products from Wonderful Company is pretty amazing, they need over 1.5 billions cubic feet of water fro the pistachios and almonds and other products they produce, the facade, within there corporate housing world and "empire", just like the modern day Pottervilles, in the movie "Its a Wonderful Life"

Right Panther: Looks delish. What do you think?
Left Panther: Looks yummers
Right Panther: You think the camera guy sees mom behind him?
Left: Doubt it. I do love when lunch is delivered and we don't have to go look

(19,569 posts)I actually had a juvenile bald eagle show up to poach doves from my feeders. Needless to say it caused quite a stir amongst the local wildlife, including the human form.
We all know they nest in the area in the winter, it was just a shock to see on of the kids start working my feeding stations for an easy meal!
He/she didn't come back after they migrated. Still, it's not something I'll ever forget! It was such a beautiful, and terrifyingly powerful creature. I was in shock the first time it showed up here. I wasn't even sure what that massive bird of prey was that set my local birds into total freak out at first. Not to mention making me more than slightly uneasy. They don't have the signature white head when they're young, but it was three times the size of any hawk I'd ever seen here.

(22,904 posts)Are you familiar with the Carolina parakeet? It's a very sad story about the only native parakeet to the United States.
Rather than go into it, I'll post a link. Weren't they pretty?

(22,904 posts)Didn't mean to make you feel bad-- sorry! But what happened to those beautiful birds is really a disgrace.
I don't think today that would happen.
At least that's some comfort.

(22,904 posts)I thought it would be a welcome news-- we're always hearing about how bad things are for certain species--
it's nice to read something positive.

(24,775 posts)I never knew there were only 22 left and that they captured (for their own good) and were part of a captive breeding program. Little did I know.
