Mainstream Media No Longer A Trusted Source For News Or Information
Americans in large numbers are turning off TV newscasts, canceling subscriptions to newspapers, and seeking other sources of news. Distrust of the national media has hit an all-time high.
A recent Pew Research Center survey found that 65 percent of Americans believe that the national news media have a negative effect on our country.

The Media should no longer be called News Stations but Political Surrogates, You take the Koch Bros., They own multable products so they spend $Millions on advertising and getting Republicans elected. Mix Advertising Dollars and Politics in the media you no longer have news.

(25,111 posts)and its all T-rump, GOP, and degrading anyone or anything that is positive. Total negative and bullshit lies 24/7.
In saner times, American were able to rely on informative news here and in the world. Now very little info about what is happening outside of the USA, unless it's negative news. Corporate media has become "Depressive News".
Even KNX here in Los Angeles is all T-rump 24/7. I'm effing sick of it.

(7,947 posts)The issue with any source of news is that they all involve people. It's very, very difficult to get an objective news story when people are involved. Everyone has their own angle on things.
What has replaced the Lamestream Media? Websites with a particular ideology or focus. How many sites exist that take into account every possible variable in a story to create a truly objective picture of a situation? I'm guessing that number would be small. Then it's up to the people reading/watching all these stories from various sources to create an overall picture, but, again, you're dealing with people. With their own particular perspective and focus.
This fight over trusted sources of news and information is a waste of time. Outside of video of everything all the time, and some very smart computer with no human input piecing everything together with no bias, everyone will trust who they want to trust, which usually means hearing what they want to hear.
We don't just want facts. We want to be able to assign values like good or bad, right or wrong, to the facts, because facts alone don't make anyone do anything.

(17,301 posts)We in the US managed more informative and accurate news reporting before now. News use to be a lot more unbiased then it is today. Today it is more like propaganda. And the propaganda is mostly all in favor of RepubliCONS and such fools.
Yes, in the past there was some bias but it wasn't so fiercely obvious as it is today. It reminds me of the old USSR. You can't trust any of it.

(19,288 posts)The 4th estate is dead. No one to question the government or the corporate structure.
Republicans hated having the truth told about them. So we quit telling the truth about them but they have continued to have talking points (lies) developed/manufactured for them, in think tanks for the 1%, and presented to Drudge, Britebart, Beck, Scarborough, Hannity, Limbaugh and the rest of the RW opinion, as news.

(1,015 posts)"1968 is one of the most talked about years in U.S. history because of all the upheaval, and Cronkite plays a central role in that year, right out of the gate," Brinkley said. "He goes to Vietnam in January, early February of '68. By February 27, he calls the war a stalemate.
He then goes and urges Robert Kennedy to run for president, then [President Lyndon] Johnson says he won't seek re-election. Then you have the assassinations of Martin Luther King [Jr.] and Bobby Kennedy, which Cronkite covers.
And then you've got the conventions, and famously in Chicago, where Cronkite's calling Mayor Daley's police 'thugs' and then [Richard] Nixon winning in that strange three-way election with Hubert Humphrey and George Wallace.

Now you have Sound Bites and then you have to Chase the Truth, hundreds of talking heads feeding the Media daily, This could be the end of America if the draining of Truth keeps falling through the cracks.

(18,998 posts)The media itself is a propaganda tool. And TPTB use it to shape public opinion.
For instance when we were "torturing some folks" they put out a show called 24 to justify it...and it worked to justify it and protect those who did it.

(43,227 posts)The "Mainstream Media" is notably flawed, but there's nothing reliable that fills the void. Usually people who discard traditional media will point to alternative online media, which too often is dubiously sourced and no better than the mainstream.
It's a lose-lose.

(18,318 posts)Revolutionary messages, and legitimizing a national mythology and agenda was accomplished by mass media. Within the last 20 years we have seen that model erode to the point of collapse. Marketers and the Marketeers have accomplished their dream of slicing and dicing political viewpoints and any kind of common dialog into a spray of equally-weighted opinion and rapid-fire debunking; my old college courses called it "individuation." The joke truly is in your hand.

(1,241 posts)the media, how the media is all left wing. Well isn't the fucking radio a media outlet also??????? 90% of radio is right wing hate and propaganda. I would love to hear some liberal a.m. radio on my local station for once.

(1,015 posts)Americans are frustrated because they know that many of the news stories they read are only opinion columns in disguise. If the story does not fit the liberal worldview, then facts are ignored, dissent is silenced, and Americans are told what to think.
Perhaps one of the worst examples of one-sided, biased reporting involves global warming.

(1,313 posts)Late Show with Stephen Colbert (he still does satire on the real events), and the occasional BBC News... those cover my TV news...
Oh, for those who think RT News is Putin's Prodigy... grow the fuck up already. Thom Hartmann at 6pm CST, Lee Camp's Redacted tonight on Fridays (it may be called "Headline News at 7pm (CST)), Headline News with Ed Schultz (M-Th, 7pm CST). Other shows on there... Excellent sources all.
Understand what you are watching... from any source, and always take anything with a grain of salt until you research it more thoroughly.
