Huge Panama Papers search database goes public Monday
On Monday, people everywhere will be able to see for themselves which politicians, celebrities and business executives allegedly kept secret shell companies that were exposed in the Panama Papers.
A Google-like searchable database is expected to go live at 2 p.m. ET, detailing ties between 368,000 people and 300,000 offshore entities.
It's being released by the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists.
"You'll see companies and their official owners. This is information that's never been available," said Marina Walker Guevara, ICIJ's deputy director. "We think that information about who owns the company should be public and transparent."

Is the age of irresponsibility ending?

(1,325 posts)It is not profit for the shareholders. That's a bunkum myth perpetrated by our business schools and financial "experts". Otherwise, why would there be non-profit corporations? The purpose of any corporation is to confer limited liability status to those running the corporation. This limit in liability is bestowed upon the owners of corporations based upon the idea that the establishment of any corporation is for the greater public good, that in general the products and employment and profits shared will be beneficial to our country. The fact that what I just typed may seem foreign or unfathomable is simply due to the huge amount of propaganda we have been fed about what corporations are, and what their primary function is supposed to be.
