Republican donors want nothing to do with Donald Trump.
On Wednesday morning, the presumptive GOP nominee, who has largely self-financed his presidential bid so far, announced that he would be soliciting checks from small contributors and would soon make a decision about whether to accept big contributions from the ranks of Republican megadonors.
But in interviews with more than a dozen major GOP funders, not one on Wednesday would commit to donating to Trump. Some raised the possibility that they would focus solely on giving to House or Senate candidates.
Others went further in expressing their discontent: Representatives of Charles and David Koch, the billionaire industrialists who helped to bankroll the rise of the tea party, warned the brothers could sit out the presidential campaign entirely or even back Hillary Clinton.
With so many of the GOPs funders closing their checkbooks, battles over money are breaking out behind closed doors. And as concern grows that Republicans will suffer a shortfall that could stymie candidates up and down the ballot, some foresee looming cash fights pitting Trump against congressional Republicans who are anxious to preserve their hard-won majorities.

(8,759 posts)People say that Trump can sway independents and that the electorate is still largely a sleep. Now they'll wake up and start paying attention and Trump might convince them that he's the right guy.
I don't believe this for a second. 538 thinks the media, so far, has given Trump $2 billion in free election coverage. There is nobody in America who does not now know Trump is running. His endless self promotion and whoring for pop culture makes him as recognizable if not more recognizable than Hillary Clinton.
And since he's been around for so long, like Hillary Clinton, I'll bet most Americans have already made up their minds about him. I think most people are entertained by his buffoonery, but won't seriously pull the lever for him.
I work at a company that is in the financial world, 90% of the people in my office are Republicans. You'd think Trump would be their guy, but that's wrong. Every single one of them, doesn't want Trump. He appalls them. They think he's a funny clown, and love talking about him like the rest of America, but none of them want Trump. They are subdued and quietly trying to come to terms with Hillary as President.
I find that interesting. That the GOP found a candidate that took this group of people, who love nothing more than bashing the Clintons, who still have anti-Clinton propaganda around the office (one guy as a queer $3 dollar "Bill" on his desk right now), and yet Trump has them thinking Hillary might not be a bad idea right now.
Suddenly up is down, black is white. Dogs and cats are living together.
So far, from my little window into the conservative world, the financial types are looking to bolt. I'm sure the religious right is feeling very queasy today also.
Looks like the Republicans are going to have a serious enthusiasm gap, it looks like only 50% of the party is fired up.

(284 posts)She rejected their endorsement, she said nothing about their money...
"In a message on Twitter Sunday afternoon, Mrs. Clinton said she was not interested in endorsements from people who deny climate science and try to make it harder for people to vote.
Want proof? She already accepted $3,500 from them in 2008.

(8,759 posts)The money guys are fat enough they can sit out an election cycle or two. Nothing will change for them. They've been sitting out, financially, all of Obama's term and done well for themselves because of it.
They're punishing the American worker now while Obama is President, its no matter to them to punish the Republican voter for displeasing them so.

(36,827 posts)Right now they are staring down the possibility of losing all 3 branches of government, which would undoubtedly rip the entire party to shreds from which they may never recover.
The biggest problem the GOP has is for the last 20 years or so their strategy has been to capture an increasingly larger share of a shrinking demographic. That's why their positions are becoming increasingly extreme. At some point that strategy becomes untenable.

So you'd end up with a Democratic White House, and a veto-proof Republican majority in both houses.
That would be really ugly.
