Disgusted and Confused by one thing in Wisconsin politics today

Rebecca Bradley won the state supreme court justice seat today
This is that horrible ass-circus that has written and said horrid things about gays, aids, compared abortion to the holocaust etc

I realize the entire conservative establishment rallied behind this horrid troglodyte
But, I was hoping that Kloppenburg would have prevailed against this 9th century, medieval escapee.
I'd have hoped that a few Kasich or Trump voters would have voted against her
Shocked, disgusted and disappointed at that sad outcome

Although the turn out was actually pretty good - for a primary.

Total was 968 to 874 or 1.83 million total votes.

Total in 2012 was 1.62 to 1.41 or 3.03 million votes.

So about 60% for the primary. That's probably comparable to the Governor's race in off years.

Close - 2.37 million votes in the 2014 Governor's election. Okay, maybe not as close as I thought - only 77%. But their 2014 election may be high for an off year as well. Comes out to 78% of 2012 compared to only 73.8% for Kansas.

5. A more analogous primary is 2008.

2012 was uncontested on the Democratic side and on the Republican side was a clusterfuck.

This is a really slow burn of a primary which is disappointing in a lot of ways on the Democrats side.

But yeah, having a judgeship decided in the 2012 primary would give a huge advantage to the Republicans. If the primary was early enough, their party at least had a contest (although I cannot now remember who was #2 or #3 behind Mitt or how close it was.) Which would likely bring more Republicans to the polls, where they would also elect a conservative judge to a 10 year term.

I remember voting in the 1988 primary in Wisconsin. It was late in the season and Dukakis was pretty far ahead. I was still hopeful that if Jesse won Wisconsin, he could somehow still win the nomination. Instead he pretty much got buried in Wisconsin.

This one is a little bit more like 2008. We have a clear front runner, but also an opponent who refuses to give up. Without a real heavyweight to help divide the "we hate the Clintons" vote, the two person race is dragging on.

I blame Clinton in large part for this by making her campaign a slow burn easy nomination. She never made herself available to large stadium events, always quiet roundtables. Where's the enthusiasm? And don't say it doesn't exist because she has gotten the votes. Just no big events have happened. It's a very careful strategy which appears to be working.

But she's going to have trouble filling stadiums like Trump, at least at first, so they need to work on that ASAP. If she was smart she'd announce a rally in NY that has a 10k+ seat stadium. If she can't fill it, well, that's her own doing by going with this slow, quiet, roundtable based campaign.

I don't remember much of that from past races. Was Kerry filling stadiums? Was Gore?

In 2000, Gore visited the city where I lived in Iowa. I wanted to see him, but he was only at private events, and heck I ended up not even going to the caucus, so I was not gonna be part of any private event. I just wanted to be part of a cheering crowd, like I was when RFK visited my home town in 1968.

Kerry had 10k strong events. I vividly remember Michael Moore stumping for him at a massive event (though Kerry might not have been there). Of course, Bush had even larger events if I recall correctly. On my phone and searching is a pain.

But I think your Gore analogy is more apt, Obama was the stadium filler then. And even he couldn't do it in 2012.

9. The 2012 recall didn't coincide with the 2012 Nov election.

The recall took place in June.

But the main problem is that it's a 4 year term and it occurs in off years.

And Democrats just have a serious problem getting people to vote in off season non-Presidential election years.

Wisconsin had the odious Republican Tommy Thompson who was apparently Governor for life. He won three or four terms before he was finally tapped by George W. Bush to be Secretary of HHS.

I was actually kinda surprised to find out that Wisconsin, along with Minnesota and Iowa are more like swing states. They really could go either way rather than being more true blue like illinois or California.

They hold their state races in the off years so that the state races get voter attention that might be swamped in the frenzy of a presidential election. At one time, this was considered "progressive". Virginia actually holds their state races in odd-numbered years and reserves the even numbered years for federal elections (president, senate, house).

When the people of Wisconsin raised up and fought back against Scott Walker's dismantling of unions, I was so proud of them and so inspired by them and their Democratic legislators.

They were so deservedly angry and I felt sure their attempts to recall Walker would succeed. I will always believe that recall election was rigged.

But now, to elect this bigoted woman to their supreme court! What on earth has happened to those good people who stood for the right thing just recently?!
