http://content.usatoday.com/communities/onpolitics/post/2012/05/military-campaign-donations-obama/1#.T8PKso7N4lIWhile the military traditionally votes for Republicans, President Obama is ahead of GOP rival Mitt Romney in contributions from military personnel, new campaign-finance reports indicate.
Obama has a more than 5-to-1 edge over Romney in political donations from individuals who list themselves as employees of the Defense Department or one of four military branches, a USA TODAY analysis of federal filings shows. Army employees are the biggest source of military contributions to each: $108,571 to Obama and $22,004 to Romney.
As National Public Radio noted this week, Obama has worked hard to court the military vote. Unlike 2008, when Obama faced a Vietnam War hero, Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., in the general election contest, neither Obama nor Romney is a veteran.
Ahead of Memorial Day, Obama's campaign launched a new ad this week aimed at the military. In it, Obama touts the killing of Osama bin Laden and highlights what he calls the USA's "sacred trust" to returning veterans to do "everything we can to heal all of their wounds."
"Hero?"
And then there's always this from http://www.gallup.com/poll/154904/Veterans-Give-Romney-Big-Lead-Obama.aspx:
Veterans Give Romney Big Lead Over Obama
Veterans responsible for Romney's advantage among men overall
by Frank Newport
PRINCETON, NJ -- U.S. veterans, about 13% of the adult population and consisting mostly of older men, support Mitt Romney over Barack Obama for president by 58% to 34%, while nonveterans give Obama a four-percentage-point edge.
It's amusing to see our Soviet-era Pravada-esque "media" trip over themselves.

(14,050 posts)1. The Reuter's poll include family whereas the Gallup is the veterans themselves.
2. Age and gender are big factors. In the Gallup poll female veterans favor President Obama (+5), but most veterans are male.
3. I don't even know if there is a way to prove that this is a significant factor, but frankly I have found a lot of conservatives lie about military service - much more frequently than liberals. Neither survey has any way of verifying that a person who claims to be a veteran did in fact serve in the military.

(137 posts)... is the recent conclusion (for all intents and purposes) of the Republican primary process.
I expect that Republican donations will pick up, especially as campaign promises start rolling out.
The military is still majority conservative.

(1,589 posts)just like regular people. it is actually headlines like this, and discussions like this that perpetrate the notion that if you go into the military, you're "conservative". Ive done more than my share of breaking down those facades since 1995. Like any good troop, give them the knowledge, give them the tools and they will make a good choice.

(137 posts)... because I haven't conducted an actual statistical analysis during my time in the service.
I'd say more than 51% and less than 90%. Hope it helps.
