(34,845 posts)I consider that the only ethical way of interacting with an online forum. (And yeah, I'm smug about it.)

(2,931 posts)People get ignored for obvious sarcasm all the time... yeesh. Debate is a major part of this place. I wish ignore wasn't even an option.

(62,325 posts)No one, no matter how nasty, and some of them are that nasty including with PMs from the Hillary side, would cause me to put them on ignore. I can IGNORE them with no problem unless I find some use for their nonsense, which sometimes I do.

(13,071 posts)Which is the problem. You have dehumanized Clinton and her supporters to make it easier for you to justify your ugly hateful posts. I actually saw posts calling supporters as shitheads and likening us to hitler's supporters. I suggest before you continue to snark, you take a good serious look at how this all started and how it is progressing.
KamaAina
(78,249 posts)I think you have your candidates mixed up.

If you see a post calling someone a shithead or comparing someone to a Nazi, alert on it. I would in a heartbeat, even if the poster had a Bernie avvie or sig line.

(15,042 posts)Most of all, I use it to avoid simple stupidity -- drunken fools, whacked-out conspiracy nuts ("BushCo caused the tsunami"), one-note wonders who post the same drivel over and over. . . Other people may choose what they perceive as the "high road" of tolerance and community, but I've no time for blithering foolishness and no interest in useless poppycock. Some will disagree but I figure they must have a surplus of life.
There are some posters whose every other utterance is imbecilic, and those who delight in being boorish with no regard for raising the level of conversation or thought. These too I choose to ignore. And it's not something I do lightly: before I click, I'm convinced these people have nothing to offer -- no insight, no new perspective, nothing to change either my attitude or thought. And though I perceive I have an open mind, that's no reason to let others use it as a sewer.
I also utilize ignore to remove trolls and other unsavory folk from my experience. Oh, I recognize they may be gone by morning, but how much more pleasant the evening is without them. I've never blocked anyone who intelligently debated me, but I'll not suffer fools gladly or madly.
If it makes people feel better about the DU "family" or some other such fantasy, you can occasionally clear your entire Ignore list. I do. Often, I find many of those I've shut off were soon after tombstoned, so I don't feel I missed anything.

(1,587 posts)I have 22 so far. Some have been there for a while, some are more recent.
I have no issue with someone contributing to a debate, supporting their side, even when they aren't willing to listen to reason (because, sometimes they're wrong, you know). I will put anyone on ignore who is hateful, nasty and pig-headed. I think five went on just this morning, and it's not the insomnia speaking.

(6,960 posts)If I couldn't tolerate snarky and silly posts then I wouldn't be here.
Over all, ninety percent of folks and posts here are civil and intelligent.
So, I don't ignore any individual.
Nor do I need 'safe places' ... as Harry Truman said, "If you can't take the heat, get out of the kitchen."
I'm very involved politically and the worst mistake you can make in this endeavor is to not listen to your opponents no matter how ugly they get.
Although I have to say that the constant over-the-top anger of some of the Hillary supporters almost makes me want to click 'Full Ignore' ... but I won't.

(55,027 posts)have 2 people on PM ignore, one has been banned still waiting on the other
had one forced ignore on DU2
has nothing to do with primaries, I like many on both sides, can't stand a few on both sides. know there is stuff I don't want to see. I think the off-site stuff is pretty sad, but I know that kind of thing goes on by PM by both factions too...

(3,447 posts)Now that I know that, I strike any who I think might qualify, but I do tend to try to give a very generous benefit of the doubt/follow some posts/etc to make sure its not just a basic disagreement. I don't always succeed, but I do try to.

(26,694 posts)I have some people on a sort of "manual ignore". I pretty much just skip over their posts and only read the replies. They're generally posters who are so predictable that you already know what they're going to say without reading it anyway.

(5,330 posts)But I've yet to meet anyone here who didn't have at least SOMETHING valuable to share.
I'd hate to miss out on some really great posts just because I didn't care what someone said about certain other topics.
Someone would have to be a pretty bad troll to ever get under my skin bad enough to full ignore. But usually those types are taken care of either by the juries or the mods in due time.

(14,177 posts)I found a large number were banned anyway. Most of the rest post infrequently. And a large number goes on vacation frequently. So I rarely see the posters I had on ignore, so life here is pretty much the same as it was when I had a list of 50 or so.

(9,385 posts)Flame bait goes in a millisecond. Contentious, pointless, round-and-round-the-tree niche ax grinders, same thing. And similar stuff, ditto. Just that, is a lot of trash, always. It does clean up the environment quite a bit, and makes room to see more threads that are more interesting.
As for people, I can ignore them "manuallly" without a button just fine.

(14,459 posts)But I did make good use of ignore a few years ago after posting in an ignore thread about how I disliked the idea of it and wound up getting my post hidden.
After that I was a born again convert! It was so quiet and nice having those 6 people on ignore, I couldn't believe I had ever lived without it.
I was thinking I needed to do it again, but most of the people who would warrant it spend most of their time on enforced vacation anyway.

I do miss the info on our accounts that let us know how many people were ignoring each of us, though. I don't understand why it was removed. Seems like a simple bit of code to implement.

Really, people? Too bad "Get a life" can't be enforced.
Somehow, a few years ago, I stumbled on wherever it is you can see if anyone has you on ignore. Yup. Sure enough, someone had me on ignore. Must be up to 500 or 600 people by now. Or something.
I'm still able get up and go to work in the morning, so it can't be too bad.
