How could we be so careless as to let the the U.S. descend in so short a time from being a wealthy and productive nation to one controlled by lobbyists, living on imports, selling our companies to our foreign competitors and living on ever increasing debt.
Our decline has been the result of decades of failed policies that are still running rampant:

(7,018 posts)half of our nation have been brain-washed, and they do believe the right-wing lies.
Right now it looks like a toss-up.

(11,304 posts)Bush told us to go shopping. Well my husband said people are foolish they think they are getting something for nothing. It turned out he was right. We got 2 unpaid wars.

(11,304 posts)said we will have to pay for this break down the line. We are. How stupid the some of these people don't realize the Bush tax breaks screwed us over very well. Now Mittens wants to go back at that apple again.

(67,112 posts)same path again, lead by America's most notorious corporate hatchet man with Bain Capital. Some days, I wonder why I even care anymore.

(11,304 posts)like they did in the old days. They don't explain it the way republicans do. They speak to the 10 graders and they tell them what they want to hear and fear. I have to say after Booker inserted his foot in his mouth last week I thought the president explained the difference what a venture capitalist does and what a president is suppose to do. I mean you can't say it any clearer but these idiots hate the black man.

to be ignorant of history, at least relative to nations failing. They seem to think there is some impenetrable shield for America, that no matter how torn the fabric of America is, we will all just be fine, and they can just plod along in their daily lives.

(12,448 posts)are not working. These policies are doing exactly what they are intended to do and they exist because of the tireless work of a small number of dedicated people throughout the political landscape to bring this about.

I don't think it is predestined that we will come back just because we are "exceptional" or so different from other countries. I don't think it was predestined that we would come back from the Great Depression but we did.
It is possible that we will come back again to be a "wealthy and productive nation", but that will only happen if we adopt policies similar to those that led to our comeback in after the Depression and WWII, i.e. high/progressive taxes, an effective safety net, effective regulation of corporations and Wall Street, support for strong unions, etc.
"Our decline has been the result of decades of failed policies that are still running rampant." So far it is not looking good.

(24,791 posts)adopting more socialist policies, i.e., universal health care; paid / subsidized college (how galling that the Repubs think that capitalizing the costs is an INDIVIDUAL benefit - it is for the future our COUNTRY!; and equity in finance /investing, can we be saved. Not to mention environmental protection.
I doubt we have the political will. I don't see the pendulum swinging back short of crisis. As long as we hold the mighty dollar as our national deity, we are sunk.

(24,791 posts)I think our society is already evidencing neurotic responses to our condition: sexuality taken to perversion; our treatment of animals in the food-chain; bullying across gender-identity lines, to name only a few.

(67,112 posts)went into great detail on the observations you just mentioned ... basically the society starts to consume itself with egregious behavior and hostilities.

(24,791 posts)it's frightening. Esp. for our young folk. I know it affects my daily mood, but I try to just do what I can, tap into humor, and think philosophically about it. Hopefully the indigenous peoples, plants and animals that were here first will reclaim their dominance...

(67,112 posts)trying to say I'm a visionary or anything, but I've always been pretty perceptive on feeling out trends, at least in business. It bothers me because I'm starting to get really apocalyptic about all of this stuff going on anymore. Like you, I can just feel we're on a really really bad path. Too many in the country are in la la land, at least IMO.
