(33,333 posts)Alas, any sort of socially driven media is dead in the U.S.
I never thought I'd live to see this day.
Alas, indeed. :sigh:

(60,010 posts)Just not on networks, which is why cable companies ( all 3 of them) are losing customers at such a rapid pace.
The internet provides a variety of options, from places like Talking Points Memo, to Alternet, to Democracy Now, Link tv,
and John Oliver just won an Emmy award for his new show.
We have had no cable or radio for years now, and get more real news and entertainment than we have time to watch, onliine.

Such is my loathing of the media consolidation and the Murdoch empire.
Alas, again. :sigh:

(60,010 posts)So many of us grew up with that magazine.
Until the last 20 years or so, it was not legal for one person/company to own so much of a publishing or tv or radio market.

(39,215 posts)election one of the things we realized is that we do not have an liberal media to speak of. Now we have even less.
This is going to be real trouble. Wasn't it Thomas Jefferson who told us that without a well informed electorate we would fail?
Well we are failing.

(16,296 posts)I've known people who have kept them for decades and when they passed their families "donated" their collection to the local school. I once asked a school librarian about the Nat Geo collections and if she ever got one. She rolled her eyes and said that got hundreds each year and threw them in the school dumpster.

(50,663 posts)Murdoch simply feels that esteemed publication is no longer printing enough photos of naked natives. He wants to return the National Geographic to its former role as every little boy's introduction to porn.

(21 posts)It is most likely that the magazine will simply continue to operate in the exactly same way and with the same tone as before the acquisition. Think about it. If they were to change the tone of the magazine or the subject matter it would lead to a public outcry (look at all the people complain simply about the acquisition) and would likely spell either financial ruin or heavily decreased profits.
If the magazine is simply left the way it is everyone wins, if it is changed everyone loses. At least hold the criticisms until the fate of the magazine is determined.
