http://www.csmonitor.com/Business/2012/0520/Pet-food-recall-that-won-t-end-Diamond-cat-food-now-riskyFrom the recall of a single batch of its Diamond Naturals dry dog food on April 6 for possible salmonella contamination, Diamond Pet Foods has expanded the recall on eight separate occasions, endured a week-long inspection of one of its plants by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), which criticized its practices, and most recently acknowledged that cats are also at risk.
Yet the Missouri-based maker of Diamond, Premium Edge, Kirkland Signature, and other pet food brands has not called special attention to the expansion of the recall to cat food beyond amending a statement on the companys Internet recall site: Diamond Pet Foods has voluntarily recalled some brands of dry dog and cat food that it manufactured in its Gaston, S.C. facility between December 9, 2011 and April 7, 2012 due to potential Salmonella contamination.
There is no specific information on which brands and batches of cat food may be affected, though you can check a questionable bag's product code to find out.
On Friday morning, the Calgary Herald in Alberta, Canada, reported that two cats in a Montreal animal shelter have died, and another is ill, after eating Diamond Pet Foods products. Also in Quebec, another person has been reported with a case of salmonella, bringing the total number of cases to 16 in the United States and Canada caused apparently by handling the pet food.

(28,581 posts)It's more expensive but affordable if you buy it on sale. Made in the US, no meat by-products, no grain/soy/corn fillers

(32,100 posts)She does very well on it, as do the kitties for whom I cat-sit. All of them are healthy and have, beautiful, shiny coats.
I believe those grain fillers are probably one of the reasons feline diabetes has become so prevalent. Cats are obligate carnivores, not grain-eaters.

(15,438 posts)It has never been recalled and my dogs and cats flourish with this food.
Chow Chows are notorious when it comes to itchy "hot spots", but ever since she's been fed Life's Abundance, she never had another outbreak again (last time was some five years ago).
It's expensive, but I don't mind paying for a dog and cat food that has real quality control, human grade meat and fish, and no fillers. The difference is, when I fed my dogs and cats Life's Abundance the first time, they didn't get diarrhea as is the case when pet owners change their pet food. It's that good.
Oh, and it ranks consistently at the top.

(32,100 posts)This is the third or fourth incident in a year from that plant. They need to shut the thing down, clear it out and sanitize it. They also need to get rid of the management, who is likely cutting corners.

(13,468 posts)I was feeding my dog Taste of the Wild until the recall. Though the bag we had wasn't affected, I have switched to Fromm, which has their own plant in WI.
This South Carolina plant seems to be a complete mess! The recalls probably won't stop until they clean it up, I can't see how anything coming out of there could be safe to feed pets or be handled by humans.
