WASHINGTON -- Are Republican lawmakers deliberately stalling the economic recovery to hurt President Barack Obama's re-election chances? Some top Democrats say yes, pointing to GOP stances on the debt limit and other issues that they claim are causing unnecessary economic anxiety and retarding growth.
The latest Democratic complaint came after House Speaker John Boehner said Tuesday that when Congress raises the nation's borrowing cap in early 2013, he will again insist on big spending cuts to offset the increase. Boehner, R-Ohio, continues to reject higher tax rates, which Democrats demand from the wealthy.
That led Sen. Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., to say Boehner is virtually assuring another debt-ceiling crisis as bad or worse than the one that shook financial markets nine months ago.
"The last thing the country needs is a rerun of last summer's debacle that nearly brought down our economy," Schumer said in a statement. In an interview, Schumer added: "I hope that the speaker is not doing this because he doesn't want to see the economy improve, because what he said will certainly rattle the markets."

"Our top political priority over the next two years should be to deny president Obama a second term." ~Mitch McConnell
A little slow aren't they?
Oh and for those who like to say Republicans and Democrats are the same...
"I certainly think bipartisanship ought to consist of Democrats coming to the Republican point of view. Bipartisanship means they have to come our way. To me, the highlight of politics, frankly, is to inflict my opinion on someone else with a microphone or in front of a camera." ~Indiana Republican Senate nominee Richard Mourdock
Both parties are NOT the same.

(9,136 posts)At the risk of sounding incendiary (And I'm one of DU's less-progressive posters), blowing off voting in this year's elections and allowing Republicans to get elected because of your apathy is like letting a drunken driver get in your car and drive away with sleeping children in the backseat.
Utterly irresponsible.

A detailed account of who was present at the dinner on that January 20 night and the plan they worked out to bring down Obama is provided by Robert Draper in 'Do Not Ask What Good We Do: Inside the US House of Representatives', published this week.
Attending the dinner were House members Eric Cantor, Jeb Hensarling, Pete Hoekstra, Dan Lungren, Kevin McCarthy, Paul Ryan and Pete Sessions. From the Senate were Tom Coburn, Bob Corker, Jim DeMint, John Ensign and Jon Kyl. Others present were former House Speaker and future and failed presidential candidate Newt Gingrich and the Republican strategist Frank Luntz, who organised the dinner and sent out the invitations.
The dinner table was set in a square at Luntz's request so everyone could see one another and talk freely. The session lasted four hours and by the end the sombre mood had lifted: they had conceived a plan. They would take back the House in November 2010, which they did, and use it as a spear to mortally wound Obama in 2011 and take back the Senate and White House in 2012, Draper writes.
"If you act like you're the minority, you're going to stay in the minority," said Keven McCarthy, quoted by Draper. "We've gotta challenge them on every single bill and challenge them on every single campaign."
The Republicans have done that, bringing Washington to a near standstill several times during Obama's first term over debt and other issues.

(10,942 posts)why people that say there is no difference between the two parties are clueless. Democrats wouldn't fucking kill the country's capacity to function out of crazed spite. Boner's threat is one more reason why every fucking sane person must vote in November and vote republicans out of control of the House while helping democrats keep and grow stronger in the Senate. If Boner is in the minority, or will be in the minority within two months when the debt ceiling vote comes due, his thoughtless fucking threat will be just that, a thoughtless threat from a powerless asshole.
