Cecil’s Brother Is Now Watching Over All Of The Pride’s Cubs

Following Cecil’s death, many feared for the welfare of his cubs: In the wild, male lions often kill their fallen rival’s cubs in an effort to stake a claim and repopulate the pride with their own offspring.

Fortunately, Cecil’s babies were spared and are being cared for by the pride’s new alpha male.

The good news comes twofold today as Zimbabwean authorities announced early this morning their plans to extradite Dr. Walter Palmer, the hunter responsible for Cecil’s death.

If convicted, he will likely face jail time.

was that Jerecho wouldn't be able to defend the pride single handedly. Hopefully this means that they are more confident that he can.

applicable to cases like this (he is answering the questions in this exchange):

Q: Take somebody I really hate, like Meese. Meese is not an elected official. Can I say that somebody should slice Meese open and wrap his intestines around a phone booth?

A. No, you probably can't. He should be flogged -- just not to death.

Q. What if we said Messe should be fucked by an elk?

A. That's apparently harmless as hell. I believe that Ed Meese -- being a person without any honor, a fat bastard, really a congenital cheap pig in the style of and on the level of Richard Nixon -- should be locked in a large concrete basement with an elk. And the elk should be ram-fed full of acid before he's put in there.

Q. An angry, horny, acid-crazed elk.

A. Meese is naked, and the elk is huge, maybe 800 plus.

Q. Elk can be ugly customers.

A. And once they're full of acid, and they're really horny -- oh yeah, all night long!

Think I need to remedy that. Your post lead me to Wiki...

Although Thompson rarely personally endorsed political labels or programs in his writings, in his letters he expressed affinity with the far left. In a 1965 letter to his friend Paul Semonin, Thompson explained an affection for the Industrial Workers of the World, "I have in recent months come to have a certain feeling for Joe Hill and the Wobbly crowd who, if nothing else, had the right idea. But not the right mechanics. I believe the IWW was probably the last human concept in American politics."[64] In another letter to Semonin, Thompson wrote that he agreed with Karl Marx, and compared him to Thomas Jefferson.[65] In a letter to William Kennedy, Thompson confided that he was "coming to view the free enterprise system as the single greatest evil in the history of human savagery."[66]

Thompson wrote passionately on behalf of African American rights and the African American Civil Rights Movement.[67] He strongly criticized the dominance in American society of, what he called, "white power structures".[68] He was a proponent of the right to bear arms and privacy rights.[69] A member of the National Rifle Association,[70] Thompson was also co-creator of "The Fourth Amendment Foundation", an organization to assist victims in defending themselves against unwarranted search and seizure.[71]

Yeah, I definitely need to remedy that.

16. His Watergate coverage in Rolling Stone

(Which can be found in all its glory in "The Great Shark Hunt" collection) was what wised me up to the realities of politics while entertaining me immensely and teaching me some very vivid and imaginative uses of descriptive language.

You might also want to track down "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas." Seeing the book onscreen by way of Johnny Depp (who channels HST so completely that Thompson himself was very impressed), Benicio del Toro as Doctor Gonzo, his lawyer and, um, co-adventurer, and director Terry Gilliam, is wonderfully mind-twisting.

Sample quote:

Thompson to a hitchhiker he and Gonzo pick up in the desert: "You want a beer? No? Well how about some ether?"

I was fresh outta college. I wasn't too political then, but working in Reagan's DC changed that pretty quickly.

F&LILV is in my Netflix queue, and I just moved it up to near the top. Gotta finish my binge-watching of "Breaking Bad" (way too late to that party...).

I remember watching a documentary about a pride with no male lion. Two brothers eventually manage to take over the pride. The brothers allowed the pride's cubs to live. So, that does happen on occasion and I am glad that it also has happened here.

Yes that's true, but the younger the cubs the more likely they are to be killed. Cubs who are a little older have a better chance to survive. Not sure the biological reasoning behind that.

Cecil the lion's brother, Jericho, is also illegally killed in Zimbabwe, official says

By Michael Martinez and Deborah Bloom, CNN

(CNN)The brother of slain Cecil the lion, named Jericho, was killed Saturday in Hwange National Park in Zimbabwe, a senior park official told CNN.

Jericho was gunned down by a hunter operating illegally, said Johnny Rodrigues, head of the Zimbabwe Conservation Task Force.

Cecil was also killed illegally, provoking an international outrage because he was a protected animal, and Zimbabwe is seeking the extradition of American dentist Walter Palmer on accusations that he and others illegally hunted the lion, authorities said.
