Question to DU... What would you do?
Published on Sep 14, 2012
A homeless man wanders into a restaurant, hoping for a free meal. Will anyone assist the down-on-his-luck man when the restaurant refuses him? What would you do?

(31,849 posts)I told a guy that told me he was homeless and hungry to have a seat, gave him a menu, then after he ordered, I gave the waitress payment for his meal and the tip.
And headed off to work.

(72,790 posts)and a lady approached me. I offered to buy her a meal at the McDonalds that was near the ATM. She refused.
I work and play in New Haven, CT, and I'm approached many times. I try to help when I can, but the Philly story kind of irked me.
I would still offer to buy a meal to the man in this story. But when I offer, please accept my offer.

(31,849 posts)when he refused the McDonalds, I offered to get him some fruit at the corner mart (right next to the McDonalds) ... When he refused that, I shrugged and told him, "I guess your just not that hungry."
He, then, told me he just wanted the money so he could get some cigarettes and a beer.
I handed him a $5 (that's was when cigarettes were less than $2 a pack) and walked back to my car.

(14,120 posts)And the person that gave the money to the homeless person leaves, the homeless person get treat with disrespect. They have the money to pay, but then you see the money get taken away by an employee and is told to get lost.
What would you do if you saw this happen?

I have done this many times. I live in a very poor area.
Oh, I'm an atheist. That might have something to do with it. I don't think there is some god who will provide. I'm the one who has to do it, thanks.

(31,849 posts)Most Christians that I know would assume that their God put them in that place TO be the one to provide.

(111,437 posts)I know a lot of white Christians who tell them to get jobs.
I also give money if I have it. I've seen what DTs look like and untreated DTs are 50% fatal.
They don't just want that bottle, they might very well need it.

(29,503 posts)him a couple dollars, which is all the cash I had at the time. Have no idea who he was, what his story was, if it was for a sandwich, or booze, who cares.

(7,365 posts)Have much greater issues than just being "down on their luck". What they need is LEGIT help, a place where they can get the services they need (as well as food of course) to help them cope with their problems, which run the gambit from drug issues to serious mental health issues.
Of course, Saint Reagan dumped the Mental Health Systems Act (which was either started or expanded by Carter) and pumped millions of mentally ill people out on the streets to either become homeless or incarcerated, which of course was the "Christian thing to do".
