Been trying to finds information, but did see that Bernie Sanders blasted Comcast for canceling his show. I heard Thom Hartmann & Mike Papantonio both comment on it. This is the SECOND time this has happened, the first was back in 2013 but protests supported him and they gave him another show. Now, I guess it's because he's talking against TPP and THAT'S NOT ALLOWED!
Democracy Much?? Sickening!

(75,480 posts)Ed's fans are working class, union people. When Ed's show is on, they are at work, except back East when they are commuting from work. Ed's show doesn't repeat later in the evening like Chris, Rachel and Lawrence's shows do. The PTB deliberately shoved him in that time slot so his rating would be low.
Frankly, this is probably a good thing for him. It will give him the freedom to move on and do what he thinks is right.

(11,619 posts)In order for a show to be a hit, it has to have viewers.
MSNBC has rarely done better than number three, beaten by CNN and FOX.
Ed, from what I read, has had the least viewers.
If liberals want Ed, or someon like him, on Televison, they need ot tune in. People did not.
Cleita
(75,480 posts)outright because they've done nothing wrong. They might move them into a closet for an office. Make them work hours that are a real hardship for them and any number of BS things to force them to quit or catch them in some petty violation of workplace rules or demands, in this case ratings. Just make sure he doesn't get ratings. This is what happened to Ed, and many before him who wouldn't lie, cheat or steal to keep their jobs.

(15,435 posts)but some people came over. I'm reading these replies and I tend to agree with you Cleita and with the fact that HIS time slot has made it very difficult for him. I Googled information about his show and found that his coverage of TPP was a HUGE NO-NO! I'm not very good at posting links, etc., but it seems that COMCAST was at the "inside" table regarding the initial TPP language.
I've been watching FSTV or LINK and other alternative information outlets but was always interested in what Ed has to say, He seemed to be more like Cenk Uger and the others that left, so now I guess it's really curtains for him too! Have never been a COMCAST fan, was a customer once and got rid of them, and now they seem to be pretty much an alternative FOX type Corporation. Thom Hartmann is constantly having trouble with his phone lines, but his show is linked through FSTV.
Oh well, just one m ore time that I've had to had crap shoved in my face!
Cleita
(75,480 posts)I really think the corporate sponsors put on the pressure not ratings. When you do shows that make the sponsors look bad they can get rid of you.
ChiciB1
(15,435 posts)you on this matter. Been around long enough now that I've seen so many people and news outlets roll over that I no longer believe we have A Fourth Estate for "we the people!" You have to go to alternative sources now, but too many people are simply stuck drinking the Kool Aid. What's worse is that they are completely UNAWARE of it!
I've been a member here since 2004 and have seen this place change in similar ways. Those of us who came here a long time ago find ourselves getting attacked by what I call DLC types. I used to post all the time, now I find myself reading more than I post because the nastiness has gotten out of control too many times.
YEP, even DU isn't the haven I felt so comfortable with. I understand compromise and am willing to look at different points of view, but I'm not really willing to compromise what I believe is in my heart. I've accepted many changes over the years, but I think this country has strayed so far away from REAL Democracy that I once knew.
As too many say over and over.... IT IS ALL ABOUT THE MONEY! We will fall and go the way of Rome if we don't wake up soon. I don't know, it's possible we've already entered the danger zone and it might be too late.
I read Thom Hartmann's "The Crash of 2016" and it made WAY TOO MUCH SENSE and I'm not sure this country is up to a BIG FIX!

(11,619 posts)In almost all cases, the simplest answer is the most accurate. I am a skeptic, but that means I don't go out of my way to look for a conspiracy.
Ratings determine how much MSNBC can charge for ads. His low ratings means he is not attracting an audience. Those who watch are loyal, but there are not enough.
It is sad, but there is not enough profit in Ed's message.

(17,865 posts)The threshold is not the same for each time slot. And, DU popularity is not the criteria used to measure success.

(94,911 posts)...then after he shifted to weekends, they gave him another chance at weekdays.
If "the PTB" hated him so much, why didn't they just fire him years ago?

(75,480 posts)any time for that matter.

(75,480 posts)that time slot to Chris Hayes, who had been promoted from weekends. He did weekends and was moved back to everyday but at 2 PT or 5 ET which is the lowest rating time of the day because they are at work in most time zones and commuting back east. This was his audience the working class.

(11,619 posts)MSNBC is a for profit chunk of a for profit company. Democracy has nothing to do with business decisions.
Ed Schultz may say important things, but people do no tune in and listen.
MSNBC is shaking up their entire line up becasue they, consistantly, fall behind both FOX and CNN for viewership.
They have done this repeatedly through out their broadcast history.
If liberals want people like schultz to be on television, they need to turn the TV on and watch it in big numbers.

(11,619 posts)It failed because liberals did not tune in. Apparanlty, we just did not tune in to radio.
MSNBC's best ratings were when Keith Olberman headlined primetime, for often as not he beat FOX.
For the most parts MSNBC has remaind number three.
I know quite a few young liberals (20 somethings) who simply do not watch cable news, with the daily show and Colbert being a big excepton. They subscribe and binge on shows they like.
It occurs to me that someone needs to reach out to Liberals under the age of forty in a different way.

(75,480 posts)investors took over who didn't understand how radio works.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Air_America_(radio_network)
From a personal point of view, the radio corporation that aired AA locally for me, was owned by RWingers so they put it on the lowest frequency station they had. In hilly country it was hard to hear it uninterrupted by weather. When it rained it sometimes stayed off the air for days before they fixed the problem. Then one day they put on different programming and no one aired any progressive radio again. It is the same to this day. The radio owners are all right wingers who prefer to put clowns on like Rush Limbaugh and company instead of good radio hosts.
It seemed like this was happening around the country because radio has been monopolized into about four giant companies all owned and run by reich wingers. None will ever have a chance unless government break up the monopolies and there is true competition in the business.

(14,093 posts)It was the grifters who screwed the effort from day one.
Many AAR shows had decent numbers, as far as listeners go. Had the network had secure financing, it could have grown into something great.
Adenoid_Hynkel
(14,093 posts)look how great his old radio partner Maron is doing. They run in the same circles, and he could have brought all his comedy pals like David Cross to a show.
He could have been MSNBC's Stewart.
Cenk could have worked, too, had MSNBC let him do his thing and not blanded-down his show.

I don't trust main stream media and MSNBC ia very mainstream .
Air America was constantly stopping maybe it could be reborn with a great talent pool the 1% are afraid of.

(15,435 posts)that the other two shows were being axed too! Sooooooo, I guess MSNBC will no longer be part of my viewing anymore. Been watching (listening) to FSTV from 8:00 AM to 3:00 PM already, and just filled in with MSNBC for those several hours until FSTV has something that interests me. Joe Papantonio is becoming one of my regulars so that covers a great deal of information for me along with my internet connections.
I won't be missing the silly crap anyway, it's been a fill in because it's been a gauge of what so many others followers talk about. Thanks for all the info.

(14,093 posts)He thrived there. He's never been a good fit for TV.
When his show left the air, a lot of progressive stations switched to sports (our local one did), as they no longer had a star to anchor their line-ups.

(2,535 posts)Stephanie Miller is fighting for dear life to keep broadcasting. Cut staff and doing show from her home. Conservatives own the radio stations and don't want liberals how much it cost them. They are losing money with some of the conservative programs but they don't care. It isn't about profit, its about propaganda.

Stop with the tinfoil shit. I know it baffles some of you that folks didn't fall in love with Ed & Cenk, but there's always a reason, and it doesn't necessarily have to be a conspiracy. Sometimes the simplest explanation is the best.
