(27,670 posts)who applaud and work for the very things I came here to unite with real progressive Democrats to fight against. There was a time when almost everyone here was united against the beliefs and actions of corporatism, neo-conservatism and the neo-cons. We had thoughtful, meaningful discussions about topics of critical importance. Brilliant progressive minds devised long, thoughtful, meaningful posts on critical issues.
It was a time when we were united in purpose, and the acronym "tl;dnr" did not exist.
It's not like that anymore. We can barely get out two posts without some jabbering corporatist strawman post disrupting conversation.
DU has been becoming increasingly more conservative and anti-progressive over the past 6 years, and this house divided is fast becoming a waste of time for many.
That said, there are a number of lovely, intelligent progressive posters, like yourself, Logical, who have come here over the last six years, and I believe that you would have loved DU back in the beginning of this century, because, back then, it was truly representative of the progressive values that you obviously believe in.
This is only part of how I personally feel, but I'm quite sure you get it.
And you know, I'm really not in the market for a good hard fracking, or another used car, at this time.

(45,251 posts)Pay per post can be very low so many one line posts are a tell, though, obviously, not an infallible one.
I googled once, after someone who worked for the DNC told me the DNC pays posters, as each politician pays at least two or three.
Posting is part of the job in some government jobs. That's been in reliable media sources, some posted at DU. (Though you would never guess that from some of the incredulous posts we see. "What? gambling in Rick's Casino? Paid posters on the largest Democratic board in the USA> Surely, you don't believe anything like that! LMAO.)
However, other kinds of economic incentives exist. A government job that doesn't require posting as part of the job, but does depend on a certain Democrat or Democrats being in office, for example. Ditto a job in the private sector that involves something similar.
And sure, there have problem been assholes mouthing off (and playing innocent) since before money was invented.

(625 posts)The decision by a special prosecutor not to bring charges against Karl Rove in the C.I.A. leak case followed months of intense, behind-the-scenes maneuvering between the prosecutor, Patrick J. Fitzgerald, and Mr. Rove's lawyer, according to lawyers in the case.
The move, made public by Mr. Rove's lawyer, Robert D. Luskin, early today, brought a surprise ending to the investigation of Mr. Rove, President Bush's senior adviser, who at one point last fall seemed to be close to facing possible perjury charges for lapses in his early testimony about a conversation with a Time magazine reporter.
Mr. Fitzgerald's decision left I. Lewis Libby Jr., the former chief of staff to Vice President Dick Cheney, alone among current and former White House officials still facing legal jeopardy in the three-year-old C.I.A. leak case.
Mr. Fitzgerald announced in a letter to Mr. Luskin on Monday that he would not indict Mr. Rove, who had testified on five occasions to a federal grand jury about his involvement in the disclosure of an intelligence officer's identity.
*****
Apparently, some DUers for their own unknown and unknowable motives have chosen to resurrect an old Jason Leopold article from TruthOut claiming that Rove would be indicted.
What these inDUHviduals are unaware of is how journalism works. I was a reporter for a daily for two years (circulation 14,000), and while far from expert, I have some inkling of the process.
It is entirely possible that the TruthOut's sources were unimpeachable and that they were saying exactly what they knew at the time--that Rove WAS going to be indicted.
But later, Rove's lawyers cut a deal, wheedled and begged, and Fitzgerald (the prosecutor) went elsewhere. This is in fact what the NY Times article implies.
What this has to do with the price of tea in China now is anyone's guess, but it apparently goes back to "shitheads gotta spew shit" or something like that.
randome
(34,845 posts)It was the assholery denials and obfuscations that followed. Instead of admitting that the sources were wrong, we were treated to a new Internet meme of "24 business hours".
People who suspected the story were accused by the authors of being cretins and worse.
Followed by more assholery that gave us "Piece Of Shit Used Car Salesman", now another Internet meme.
And don't forget the great Turbo-tax scandal that wasn't.
Tell me, is that how journalism is supposed to work?

He said on July 18, 2009, Any plan I sign must include an insurance exchangea one-stop-shopping marketplace where you can compare the benefits, costs and track records of a variety of plans, including a public option to increase competition and keep insurance companies honest...
There was also the unfortunate incident of Obama claiming he would "renegotiate NAFTA" but then quickly backing away from that after taking office. Candidate Obama: "I will make sure that we renegotiate . . . I think we should use the hammer of a potential opt-out as leverage to ensure that we actually get labor and environmental standards that are enforced. And that is not what has been happening so far."
By any objective measure, the President lied to his staunchest supporters and caved to the people who hate him on any number of important issues. He did however collect some 20 million dollars from HealthCare Insurance corps.

(58,724 posts)It's not so much the fact that the story did not turn out as advertised, it's that when it became clear that Rove wasn't going to be indicted on the day the article said he would, "24 hours" was changed to "24 business hours". I would think a journalist would just say they might have gotten the story wrong rather than resorting to that sort of silliness.
Damansarajaya
(625 posts)they thought Rove would be indicted soon.
Reporters only have their sources to go on.
The much more experienced Dan Rather and 60 Minutes II producers got snared in a bogus story about a Commander Killian's memo that resulted in Rather's termination with CBS. In that particular case, I thought Rather blew it because he didn't check out the paper trail of the memo and he and the producer believed the lies the source fed them without follow up.
That's a mistake even a rookie shouldn't make.

(45,251 posts)Cruel, ugly pile ons again and again just don't tickle my funny bone. Neither does any other kind of ugly bullying. Go figure.
DU makes it fairly easy to engage with the site on one's own terms (such as by ignoring any people or posts that you find to be unpleasant).
Among other things ,that description would have fit every snarker on the 24 hour thread 9 years ago and on its successors, including the one from a few days ago and many on this thread. One joins a discussion board to discuss, not to put an entire sector of the board on ignore. Besides, certain things need rebuttal I have never believed that the way to deal with a bully is to ignore him or her. They don't go away. They just get emboldened and escalate.
However, yes, I am aware of ignore. I used to wonder why people used it, but I finally did last year I the past year, I added maybe 4 more. In the past 24 hours I added about 10. And I will probably add as many more in the next 24 hours.
ETA: I don't think Will left because he couldn't take a joke. Like so many others on the left, he left because of what DU is, not because of what he lacks.
oberliner
(58,724 posts)That's clearly not true. Look at the love being shown in this farewell thread.
Generally speaking, I think most posters here either don't know or don't care about the incident.
I really don't think "an entire sector" would need to be put on ignore. Like I said, I would think you could just take the joking in a good natured way. I think the number of people engaging in "ugly bullying" is very small and could be ignored and/or reported for their behavior.

It is supposed to be a discussion forum.
We should be courteous to each other. Sometimes, unfortunately, people's passions carry them away.
But we are not a family. We really hardly know each other.
This is a political discussion site. I'm here to learn and to share ideas. There is nothing to get mad about. There is only to learn.
We are not a family. We are seekers who share moments in time talking about the issues of the day.

What the hell, it's an internet board. I don't have to bash anyone over the head with my point of view, and no one who tries to bash me over the head with theirs gets taken very seriously, at least not by me. People have put me on ignore. I don't give a flying duck. I haven't put anyone on ignore. I just ignore them if they post something I find offensive or stupid. All posts vanish in the haze sooner or later anyway. Yours, mine, everyone's. Sure, you call Obama something nasty, it gets remembered, but only because YOU are remembered. I can call him anything I want and no one will remember that two hours later.
And here's a verse from a song almost no one has heard:

"And if you've got a question
"Ask me nice."

Son, we post on a forum in a cyberworld that doesn't even exist, hanging out in cyberspace.
Which means it must be guarded by men with keyboards.
Who's gonna do it, you?
Your friend, Leopold?
I have a greater responsibility than you two can possibly fathom.
You weep when you try and garner sympathy after you curse the Democratic President.
You have that luxury.
You have the luxury of not knowing what I know . . that while you were busy sniveling about Obama, which was way beyond pathetic . . has probably kept other new members from posting here at the DU.
And my existence here, which obviously seems grotesque and incomprehensible to you, saves threads!
You don't want the truth, because deep down in places you don't talk about at Facebook overnight, slumber parties, you want me on that forum.
You need me on that forum.
We use words like "honor", "code", "loyalty" to sound like we know what we're talking about.
We use these words wasting our time pretending like we are defending something.
You use them as a punch line, which I admit turns out to be a lot funnier sometimes.
Nevertheless, I have neither the time, nor the inclination, to explain my posts to a man who rises way too early in the morning because of his living in the Eastern Time zone, who crawls out from under his blankets only to run to their computer first thing in the morning just to spew bullshit about Obama on the very forum that I participate on, and then whines about the manner in which I participate!
I would rather you just said "derp", and went on your way.
Otherwise, I suggest you pick up your mouse, and start a post.
Either way, I don't give a damn what you think you are entitled to!

(5,400 posts)Did I ever get around to mentioning to you that a piece you wrote was referenced by SF icon John Varley?
If not, well, better late than never.
A PRE-INAUGURAL MESSAGE FROM JOHN VARLEY
There is only 1 day left in Americas 8-year Millennial Nightmare. There are probably those who feel we should let bygones be bygones, like Nancy Pelosi taking impeachment off the table in 2006. And whats the point of prosecuting the people who perpetrated the so-called Bush Administration upon this great country? Lets put it all behind us and move on to a new era of sweetness and bipartisan light.
Well, fuck that. Sure, on January 20th I will celebrate along with most Americans, wish President Obama well, and good luck. Hes going to need a lot of it to clean up the mess left by these looters and desecrators of all we hold sacred. But we at Varley.netthat is, me and Leeare not about to forget. We will continue to hope for war crimes trials, at the very least, and hope for much, much more than that.
So in that spirit, in this last week we will be quoting excerpts from an excellent recent indictment by William Rivers Pitt, entitled ironically, you may be sure The Greatest Greatness of George W. Bush, in which he enumerates just some of the crimes committed by these low men (I like that term for Bush, Cheney, et al.) who served the worst president in American history.
After the 20th we will stop going negative except, we hope, to report on legal proceedings against the oh, how I love to use this phrase against Bush/Cheney and Co. evildoers. And after the 20th, as soon as he is confirmed, we could all write to the new Attorney General to tell him we do not want to let bygones be bygones. Tell him to nail the bastards to the wall.

(6,143 posts)I find it fascinating. You got ratfucked. So did Dan Rather. Life goes on.
A tell-all reveal of the rove-indictment affair would be awesome (if it hasn't been told already and I just missed it.)

(4,280 posts)I don't want you to go. I became an activist after hearing you in Chapel Hill during W's term. Your assessment of what was going on, regarding our being spied upon and our suddenly right leaning MSM was correct. You are wise and eloquent and we need you.

(10,558 posts)It is an honor to add mine to such a list. It would be an even bigger honor if you should see this post: Thank you for making me laugh, thank you for making me angry and most importantly thank you for making me think. I will strongly miss being able to say that THE William Pitt is a fellow DUer.

I heard Hallmark's 'Sorry you are leaving a messageboard' line of cards was a flop, because nobody knew where to mail them.
