Planned Parenthood is coming under intense scrutiny by Tennessee lawmakers and members of Congress, with a vote on a measure to de-fund the organization to be taken up in the U.S. Senate as early as next week.
Energy and Commerce Committee Vice Chairman Marsha Blackburn, a Tennessee Republican, has asked for a Congressional investigation, while fellow Republican Rep. Diane Black of Gallatin introduced a bill to strip all federal funding of the organization for one year while an investigation is completed.
Meanwhile, two state lawmakers Sen. Mike Bell, a Riceville Republican, and Rep. Jeremy Faison, a Republican from Cosby have set an Aug. 19 "fact-finding meeting" to examine enforcement of a Tennessee law banning the sale of an aborted fetus.
Any Congressional action to suspend funding would have limited impact in Tennessee, one of a handful of states to have already largely de-funded Planned Parenthood. Abortion clinic directors in Tennessee have said they have complied for decades with the sale ban, enacted in 1989.

(31,537 posts)that by providing sex education and contraceptives , PP greatly reduces unwanted pregnancies, thereby reducing the number of abortions overall. That doesn't even take into consideration the number of lives saved by the health screenings they perform.
