Confederate Flag Day debate draws support and opposition (NC)

KINSTON, Lenoir County - Lenoir County Commissioners listened to public comment Monday night about whether to continue flying the Confederate flag once a year on county courthouse grounds. It's all part of "Confederate Flag Day" celebrated each year on March 4th. It's been a tradition in Lenoir County since 1992. That's when then-Governor Jim Martin approved a proclamation that the seven-star first national flag of the Confederacy would fly once a year in honor of Confederate soldiers ... "The Confederate war flag and any other flag that symbolized the Confederacy belongs in a museum and not over or on our local government property," Lenoir County NAACP President James Mumford said. "It is disrespectful to the minority community as tax-paying citizens." County commissioners took no action on the Confederate Flag Day issue Monday night ...
