Let me say this once again: What Donald Trump said was wrong. Period. No exceptions.

I know some people are willing to write it off to the tune of, "Trump's an asshole, but he was talking about John McCain, so it's okay."

No.

It's not okay.

What Donald Trump said was, "I like people who weren't captured."

That's what he said. That's what was so offensive.

It wasn't just about John McCain. It wasn't just about whether someone's a hero or not if they are a POW.

It's a matter of basic respect. And Donald Trump, in his notorious impulsivity, basically said if someone is captured on the battlefield, they aren't worthy of respect.

I have an uncle who was taken prisoner in the Pacific during World War II. Now I'm not going to pretend to say I knew him well. I may have met him once as a child and that's it. But I did read a journal he kept while on a POW boat and the notes he took about all of his comrades dying around him, and the bombing runs, and the hunger, were absolutely harrowing.

Is my uncle automatically a hero just because he was a POW? No. Is John McCain automatically a hero just because he was a POW? No.

But both of them, as well as anyone else who has been taken prisoner during war, should be afforded some respect. Donald Trump indicated he had no respect whatsoever for those people because they weren't "winners" in his feeble little mind. And that's just dead wrong.

So, please, DU. I don't care if you dislike John McCain. No excuses for Donald Trump and what he said.

I know folks are upset because of the beating Sen. Kerry took from the GOP about his service and no repubs came to his defense, but we should absolutely never stoop to their level. The GOP has a terrible history of how they treat our vets and the swiftboating of Kerry should never be forgotten, but let them own that, we are much better than they are.

I'm no fan of McCain, but his military service and that of others no matter what side of the aisle they're on should definitely be off limits and particularly POW's who showed amazing courage and deserve our respect. If we want to criticize McCain, as a public figure his politics is fair game and that's what we should stick too and furthermore he's not even running for anything. Trump is an idiot for even bringing McCain's name into this, he's a moron, delusional and let's hope his idiot campaign runs it's course and takes the entire GOP down with him.
