Major Garrett is a huge asshole. If U wanna "strike a nerve" with POTUS, why not just scream the N word? That shld get his attention.

Bill Maher isn't mincing words.
The HBO talk show host blasted CBS News' Major Garrett on Twitter Wednesday, hours after the White House correspondent asked President Barack Obama a question that, Garrett later said, intended to strike a nerve.
If you want to "strike a nerve" with the president, Maher asked, "why not just scream the N word?"

(42,426 posts)No member of the WH Press Corps would ever treat a Republican president this way. I could hear him sneering through my radio and seeing it later was even worse.
Maher is absolutely correct in this case.

Remember Helen Thomas' prominent re-seating insult? That was just the most public, symbolic instance, too. And corporate media sorts laughed about it-- it seemed to be endearing to most of them.

I remember "Free Speech Zones" that kept journalists and protestors alike a mile away from Dubya. Literally a mile, behind chain link fences.
I remember that the entire Press Corps was deathly afraid of annoying Bush, Cheney, or any of their minions, lest they "lose access." Almost nothing was questioned. All anybody had to do was say "9-11" and "Terra, terra" and the questions would stop.
THE ENTIRE MAIN STREAM MEDIA TURNED INTO A BUNCH OF STENOGRAPHERS FOR THE DURATION.
Forget? I will never forget how the media treated Bush. It was a complete betrayal of journalistic ethics.

(73,662 posts)That is a very, very weak debating point. The "well I guess that you hate America!" bit supposes that people are willing to invest in the rather limited choices of agreeing with you, or being unpatriotic and in favor of kidnapping. There are, of course, hundreds of alternatives to black and white thinking.
You certainly have every right to believe that no hostages should be left behind. But there are many others who understand exactly why President Obama was not willing to have that issue infringe upon the negotiations on potential weapons. That belief in no manner indicates, as you claimed, that they are good with innocent people being held hostage under any circumstance.
That tactics would not be acceptable in a high school debating class.

I was so proud of Obama, he handled himself with dignity.

(10,044 posts)the day after that and paid attention to Major Garrett - his words, his speech, his appearance and facial expressions, and he doesn't look right. He's either very tired or very drunk or a combination of the two...
He appears to be one miserable and unfriendly cuss.
I can see why Obama got irritated with him...it wasn't just his words, it was his whole ugly demeanor, and he should be subjected to a mental exam before his pass is renewed.
