Emma tucked her bald tail against her legs and shrunk into the garbage that had become her private nest. Alone in the city of Plovdiv, Bulgaria, invisibility was her best friend and worst enemy at the same time. Staying out of sight is the perfect way for stray dogs to avoid the men who swing heavy sticks at them, but it also brings on perpetual hunger and an alien fear of humankind.
No one wanted to lay a hand on Emma. Tsvetelina was her only ray of hope.
It was by a single thread of serendipity that rescuer Tsvetelina Vrancheva spotted Emma in a pile of rubbish. On her hands and knees, Tsvetelina crawled toward the dog with no fur coat. Jeans can be thrown into the washing machine, Tsvetelina told herself as she pushed the garbage aside with her legs. Sticky hands can be relieved with a lather of soap, she said as she slipped on rotten meat. Just a few feet away was a dog whose health and safety had reached the tipping point and Tsvetelina was not about to let her fall.
A frightened Emma at the moment of capture.
That first day that Tsvetelina tried to coax Emma toward her, it simply wasnt meant to be. Emma was too sick and too untrusting, growling and retreating. This rescue would require a trap.

(7,499 posts)I cannot stand cruelty. In the past few years I've called the police to report a dog in a hot car (although the windows were all down, the car was parked in the sun on a 95 degree day), reported horses in a corral at the fairgrounds that had no shade and no means of escape in the 100+ degree weather, and personally confronted a man in the park who was "walking" (dragging) a kitten on a leash to train it to walk on a leash. I got nowhere with him, so I went straight to the police department. I was so angry my hands were shaking.
So glad this sweet dog was saved and is now living a good life. Kudos to the kind and good folks who made this happen.
