Keith Koffler writes that despite what youve read in the media, even some outposts of the conservative media, these Trump acolytes in general are not racist against Latinos and they have not been seized by madness. They are, however, angry. Very angry. And many are agonizingly fearful about the future of the nation. They believe that vast changes to the country are being wrought in ways that are undemocratic, dishonest and perhaps even illegal. Trump, who seems perpetually angry, is an expression of the angst of conservatives who believe the United States has gotten so deep into a mess that a little extremism in the defense of liberty is no vice. What they adore about Trump is that he is a pugilist who has emerged at a time when someone needs to start throwing punches.

(34,589 posts)Two different group of 99%ers, both knowing they've been hurt badly by 25 years of awful governance.
But one group knows what the answer is, the other group need help in pulling their heads out of their asses. I expect that Sanders will coax many heads out.

Sanders has so much to offer EVERYONE especially those who are stuck on popular name recognition-only.

Keep going with this Bernie!

(59,602 posts)Misplaced fears, unjustified terror, mile-high ignorance and a comic-book understanding of the world - all working together as slings and arrows of an outrageous world that just won't wake up and see the amazing super-awesomeness of the Yewwwnited States of 'Murca.
Shallow anger for shallow people.
Deep anger is something entirely different - anger at, say, a criminalized local court system with fines, tickets and jails all in a row for Driving While Black or Brown, Walking While Black or Brown, Making Eye Contact While Black or Brown.
Anger at, say, the ability of police departments to kill at will, and (for the most part) face a couple of grueling weeks of paid administrative leave as a result.
Anger at, say, a succession of shitty $9.50/hour jobs, which offer you the flexibility to stitch two or three together to almost make the rent, or anger at lousy school systems, endless standardized testing and diplomas servicable as toilet paper.
Anger at, say, politicians watching a world simultaneously going up in flames and melting down, and offering well-crafted word-fluff as "policy".
I'd say all of the above qualify as deep anger.
As for Trumpville . . . fuck 'em.

(45,851 posts)Neither party wants to address the deep anger though.
People vote for the party that addresses the issues they find important, say what you will "conservatives" have a higher and more motivated turnout largely because the Republican party addresses the issues those voters have been trained to consider important. The Republicans throw their angry but shallow base large chunks of red meat frequently, they keep their base goosestepping to the polls.
On the other hand the Democratic party hasn't addressed the deep anger on economics and class issues any more than absolutely necessary since at least the Reagan administration and even then only in the most condescending manner possible. The Democrats feed their base thin gruel and go all Oliver Twisty on anyone who dares ask for more substantial fare.
Then they complain about low turnout, speak to people's issues and let your actions match your words and turnout becomes far less of a concern.

(30,439 posts)It seems to me that conservative white GOPers are by far the angriest voting block. Many of these folks are quite racist to boot. That's why they love them some Donald Trump. They love his rants against Mexicans.
Sometimes I take a gander at websites like Free Republic and I just LOVE how miserable so many of them are.
These guys are positively furious about everything....from gay marriage to Obamacare. The Iran nuclear deal has them positively apoplectic. They're convinced armageddon is here.
Those dumbshits are a good contrary indicator.
If they are angry, then that's a good thing.

(45,851 posts)Conservatives as currently constituted are loud and have a huge megaphone in the MSM and talk radio, they have been extensively and expensively trained in how to be what they are because they are such useful idiots.
Jay Gould once remarked that he could hire half the working class to kill the other half, Gould was an optimist.

(5,364 posts)I was going to say "drunk angry" or "barstool bravado" anger, but your term is more accurate.
I've known too many of these types over the years ( decades ) and they've all shown how they're peripherally informed at best, and consistently bark up the wrong tree as to the source of their woes.
They're full of passionate emotion and righteous indignation...and they don't know shit. But they vote.

(15,805 posts)Yes, the world is changing, but they are not. All the right bent people who call themselves leaders, their populist groups, and religion, their favorite media, have all conspired to hold conservatives back and prevent generations of Americans from maturing and reaching their full potential.
Now their all stuck in limbo, trapped in a timewarp with no face-saving way out of the morass they've created. The Republicans gave them fear, terror, hate and bigotry, and now they've suddenly discovered that the world rejects everything they've been lead to believe is vital to their existence. To grow, to change, is just a bridge too far and would mean they would have to set aside everything they know and adapt to fit the modern world.

(9,002 posts)The magnificent Donald Trump has soared, bald-eagle-like, to the top of Republican presidential primary polls. Hes now in second place, behind only Jeb Bush, with what The Donald might call the highest 13 percent ever recorded in human history in polls conducted since he announced his bid for the presidency last month. So how seriously should we take the Trump surge?
The take-Trump-seriously logic goes something like this: Theres a lot of anger in the far right of the Republican Party, and The Donald is successfully tapping into it. Hes articulating positions that appeal to the far right on immigration, education and President Obamas place of birth. The magnificent Trump, himself, has acknowledged that the tea party loves me. (Then again, what group does Trump believe doesnt love him besides the establishment?)
But the polling points to another, less sexy story: First, Republican voters dont rate Trump as all that conservative, and second, hes actually polling about equally well among all sections of the GOP. In Trump speak, this means he is loved universally; in reality, the broad, shallow nature of Trumps support suggests its due mostly to near-universal name recognition, thanks in part to being in the news more often than the news anchors.

(50,566 posts)I know an old white guy who has benefited from every advantage, lives in luxury in his late 70s, and is furious with "The Others" -- especially Latinos. He is getting union benefits and he worships Reagan the union buster. I want to tell him to fuck off but he is weaseling his way into the family through a relative.
