Obama pushing broadband for low-income households

President Obama on Wednesday will announce plans to work with local governments, telecommunications firms and nonprofits to provide broadband service and digital training to more than a quarter million low-income households.

The Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) pilot program — dubbed ConnectHome — is designed to bring residents of public or assisted housing online in 28 communities.

The plan will bring broadband Internet service and training to close to 200,000 low-income children, the administration said.

“While many middle-class U.S. students go home to Internet access, allowing them to do research, write papers, and communicate digitally with their teachers and other students, too many lower-income children go unplugged every afternoon when school ends,” the White House said.

1. How about this?

I don't know what the president is doing, but I can say what he should do. Make the FCC kick some ass and force the telecom industry to serve everybody. There are still rural areas where there is no broadband signal of any kind available, your cell phone will not work, and the people are isolated from the modern world. This does not happen in other industrialized nations. Why do we allow it here?

Then maybe people in those areas would have access to some other source of information other than Rush on AM.

4. Exactly right. Band aids are very useful. But they are still just band aids. How about bringing the

U.S. into the 21st century with respect to internet accessibility, speed, price, and service quality.

As it stands we suck on every count. And I bet all of these problems are caused or exacerbated by the telecoms.
