There is still six hours or so to go before the deal is officially announced, but the draft has been finalised. Presuming that no veto proof majority votes against it in the us senate then war will have been averted with Iran.
I doubt that any other potential contender for the American presidency would have had the fortitude and courage to spend the political capital required for a deal such as this. Certainly not a republican and probably not Clinton or Edwards either.
Iran has a semi meaningful democratic process, it has the largest Jewish minority in the middle east outside if Israel, it allows people to practise their religion, allows women to drive and both Sunni and Shiite to practise freely. it allows transexual people to legally reaasign their gender, and has made cannabis de facto legal. It is a deeply flawed state but nevertheless better than most in the region and certainly not deserving of the grotesque characterisation afforded to it by the American media.
Hopefully given the common American interests in Iraq, Afghanistan and elsewhere this can be the start of a new relationship between the parties.

(16,104 posts)Iran should have been our natural, more secular ally in the Middle East.
It all started with the Shah, medical sanctuary, embassy hostages - we radicalized them! Then we backed Saddam in a proxy war.
As we invaded Afghanistan and Iraq - on either side of Iran, by the way - I can't think of why they would possibly pursue a nuclear deterrent?
Let's put down the swords, and pick up the plowshares! We don't trust them? I'm glad Kerry and Obama persuaded them to trust us!
Get 'er done, boys!

(2,060 posts)I don't remember anyone every saying that WAR was a foregone conclusion, whether or not Iran built their own nukes or not.
I applaud any kind of diplomacy that limits nuclear weapons, but I am NOT willing to sacrifice MY kids or hard-earned dollars to fight some zealous anti-Muslim crusade. Israel has nukes, and that's part of the reason they can terrorize the Palestinian people with impunity.
When are we going to send a diplomatic team to Jerusalem to beg Netanyahu to give up HIS nuclear program?

(1,213 posts)For Airbus, Boeing and other manufacturers, that could mean up to $20 billion in deals, shaped in part by the negotiating positions of various camps during the lengthy nuclear talks.
