As a chorus of sexual assault accusations against Bill Cosby resounded this winter, some fans and famous friends stood by him, calling the allegations unproven attacks on a comedy legend.
But for some, the breaking point came this week, when newly unsealed court documents revealed that the comedian has admitted to giving at least one woman quaaludes before sex the kind of behavior long suspected by women who have accused him of drugging and abusing them.
"Completely disgusted," tweeted singer Jill Scott, who had vociferously defended her mentor. The Bounce TV and Centric networks stopped re-running "The Cosby Show," apparently booting the 1980s comedy classic completely off TV. Some fans who went to his recent performances, even as the allegations swirled, said they won't go again.

(47,209 posts)Many people can be convinced they're "tougher" if they give victims half the blame for any situation. They're the kind of people who convince victims to blame themselves.

(82,849 posts)The people that defended Cosby did so publicly and put themselves out there for him. Bill Cosby knew what the truth was all along, and he had to know his sealed testimony would be made public some day. Instead of reaching out to his erstwhile supporters ("Hey Jill/Whoopi/Whoever, thanks for your support, but , uh, there's something I need to tell you" , he just let them get out there on the cracked limb with him. He said nothing.
Now the limb has snapped off, taking Cosby with it, as it should. But it's also resulted in tremendous embarrassment for people who went to bat for him publicly while he remained silent.
Real nice, Bill.

(40,656 posts)do with the history of black men getting shot down for their success. This time he shot himself. She is really pissing me off with her almost stupid support. She ignores the evidence out of his own mouth.

I wonder if they still feel the same today?

(12,778 posts)I don't remember that part.
I'm sure they don't want to remember that either. It's hard to find a Cosby defender (besides Whoopi Goldberg) these days.

(20,792 posts)way back in the day, when the only blacks on TV were drug lords or welfare queens, it really was Cosby who made black normal for white america.
Ok, he's a rapist, too, but you can't deny the fact that he changed race relations in america for the better.
I'm old enough to remember when Diahann Carroll debuted in Julia in 1968. I was 8 years old, and it really was different, because the character was written as entirely sympathetic. She was beautiful and kind and it mattered to a country kid like me who didn't know any black people.
The Jeffersons didn't do anyone any good, and so Cosby really changed everything.
Just like my mixed feelings about Michael Jackson, I have to admire the fact that everyone loved Michael: Young or old, rich or poor.
Just as in the sports or music or film industries, the people who paved the road for future blacks were real people with real flaws.
I do hope there is some way to prosecute Cosby, but one thing is for sure: With all of the press attacking him, he won't be able to continue the violence, and he's lost his place in america.
I'm going to assume he won't even try to resume his previous life: He's old enough that he can either retreat to his private homes or just get sick and disappear. I feel bad for his family: They didn't deserve this.
