LOS ANGELES (Variety.com) - Stephen Colbert revealed to Jerry Seinfeld on Wednesday's season finale of "Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee" that he was planning on leaving "The Colbert Report" even before getting his "Late Show" gig.
Colbert had been hosting the "Report" on Comedy Central for nine seasons when he got the coveted CBS job. The final episode of "Report" aired in December of last year.
"I was ready to stop," Colbert revealed when Seinfeld said he "never seemed tired." "I was going to stop whether or not -- the Letterman thing fell in my lap."
And unlike David Letterman, whose shoes he's officially filling at CBS come September 8, Colbert said he's not interested in getting into any feuds with other latenight hosts. In fact, he and "Tonight Show" host Jimmy Fallon celebrated his new gig over drinks. "I think nothing would be more boring than a latenight war," Colbert said.

(182,968 posts)For The talk show guys they have 8 minutes of monologue and prep for the rest of the show.
For Colbert and Stewart they had 22 minutes (less the interview) and they have less than 1 day to prepare depending on what the latest news story is. Yes they have a lot of staff but that just adds to the ideas and jokes to shift through in very short order.
