(31,011 posts)They still call themselves republicans, but have voted mostly Dem since hurricane Katrina.
The ones I know are full on wingnuts.

(28,017 posts)Both in Their 70s, and dedicated GOPers, until they looked at the current party, and concluded that they are insane.
The GOP I mean.
My father called himself more conservative than Attila, until recently. Now, he agrees that the GOP has, in his words, "gone whereno sane man has gone before." and he doesn't even like star trek.

(25,035 posts)never vote Puke and haven't in decades but are stubborn about leaving their party despite it being a front, one chick maybe has never voted Republican but it is their family deal and I reckon they are awaiting the return of the Rockefeller types or some such.
I don't know any "real" Republicans that are switching, at the moment.
I'm curious about TeaPubliKlans that voted Obama last time that are going back "home" and even more so those that went with McShame last time but finally are off of dumber than dogshit mode.

(1,033 posts)One of my uncles is even running for office as a "severely conservative" candidate. (My dad's side is heavily Democratic, being big into the auto industry).
That being said, there are a few relatives on my mom's side that say they'll vote for Obama. My cousin is disillusioned with the Republican Party, and though he considers himself conservative, he will vote for the president because he doesn't want to see what a Tea Party Congress would potentially enact into law if Romney wins and the Tea Party takes over the Senate.
My aunt and uncle are going to vote for Obama because they have a deep suspicion of Mormons. No joke. They despise Obama and think he's socialist, but they are so suspicious of Mormons that they'll vote for "Bambi" as they call Obama.
All the repugs I know would rather vote for the wrong candidate than admit that the republican party isn't all that they claim to be.

(20,277 posts)They used to be staunch repubs, but say that the gop is so far from reality that they can't vote for them anymore.

(5,364 posts)I don't know of any self-styled Capital "R" Republican "team player" type that is anything other than staunchly anti-Obama.
I DO know however some people who are sort of conservative ( at the risk of oversimplification, I'll call them center-right ) who may well hold their noses and vote for Obama because the GOP is just doubling, tripling down on the nuttiness. I can think of a couple of conservative-ish people who will absolutely NOT vote for Romney, but will more than likely stay home on super tuesday.

(10,000 posts)IMO, the biggest challenge either candidate will face is motivating people to come out and vote. While the economy is perking up, it's hardly robust. OTOH, while I hear Republicans recite the litany ("Mitt's the nominee and we're lining up behind him" I can't recall a candidate they've been less enthusiastic about, and I can recall elections back to Nixon. The Baggers wanted Newt or Santorum; what they got was Romney. OTOH, as we've seen here on DU, progressives and our President have not always seen eye to eye.
