A new video, reportedly released by ISIS, appears to show 25 soldiers being executed at the amphitheater in Palmyra, Syria. The mens executioners look to be boys in their teens. The video has not yet been independently verified.
In the video, a group of several hundred men watch as the uniformed soldiers are forced to their knees, guns to their heads, and executed. The BBC reports that the Islamic State has said that the executed men were soldiers captured in the city of Homs. According to Al Arabiya, the video begins with a recitation of the Quran.
The video can be seen here, for now. (Gone from Youtube, which is good thing)
After capturing Palmyra in May, ISIS announced that it would not destroy the citys ruins. (It has, however, destroyed statues found at the site.) This is at least the second round of executions the militant group has carried out in the citys ancient amphitheater.

So what are we supposed to do? What are we going to do?
This is the questions we should be asking our candidates, tonight they showed many wounded vets in honor of the Fourth of July... and they fought for what? For this?
I'm ashamed.

(45,851 posts)But every time the US gets involved in the Middle East we seem to end up making things worse rather than improving them. If we were capable of running our own show a bit better I might be a bit more sanguine about our prospects of fixing the Middle East.
All I know it's I don't see and end in sight for this group. ME has literally been a bloodbath since I was born, not a comforting thought.

(38,613 posts)Can we have an honest conversation about it? There are plenty of other countries who can handle this, and they're directly affected. Why aren't you asking why is "slaughter okay" with them?
When I say we I mean the world, humanity as a whole.
I wasn't implying dishonesty sorry if you felt that way.

(44,173 posts)That need not mean that we (the US) need to get involved, which is a more complicated question.

(17,635 posts)As we've seen through the last few decades of meddling, military weapons are fungible - you provide them for one cause, then surprise! they end up being used for something else, maybe by someone else - maybe even the people you were trying to provide them against in the first place.
I'm definitely in the "do something" camp and that also that it can't be the U.S. directly. It needs to be led by Middle East nations in a coalition. We should help but very carefully, and with great sensitivity to our recent past history in the region and how we would be viewed by the actual inhabitants we are trying to help. (In other words, a whole lot differently than how we normally go into a country. Good luck with that. ) What we definitely shouldn't do, in my opinion, is arm one side of the Arab-Israeli conflict, which is what it sounds like you are saying Bernie supports.
(Btw I am generally pro-Bernie.)

(53,127 posts)I don't think, however, this situation is equivalent to Bush and Saddam, and it is a mistake to see it as such.
You're definitely right about arms intended for one cause ending up being used for another, often against us. It seems no matter what we do, we manage to make things worse.
We (The World) need a new strategy on how to minimize this group.
