Charges possible against Charleston Church shooter’s associates

Last edited Fri Jul 3, 2015, 10:37 PM - Edit history (1)

A joint state and federal investigation into the activities of accused Charleston church shooter Dylann Roof has widened to include other persons of interest, according to multiple sources familiar with the ongoing investigation.

The expanded scope of the investigation now includes people with whom Roof associated in the weeks before the June 17 shootings of nine African-Americans at Emanuel AME Church in Charleston, the sources said. Roof, 21, of Columbia, is white.

Although it appears Roof traveled alone to and from Charleston on the day of the killings, it is possible others had some knowledge of what he planned to carry out, said the sources, who are not being identified because they were not authorized to speak publicly about the investigation.

Investigators began to explore how much Roof’s associates knew, and when they knew it, after reviewing his cellphone and computer records, the sources said.

"One possible charge could be misprision of a felony, which means a person had knowledge of a crime to be carried out and did not inform law enforcement. Other charges might be lying to a federal law enforcement officer."

It sounds like he might have said something beforehand to acquaintances. And maybe they were less than forthright about it.

But the use of "terror cell" here is as propagandistic and tendentious as its common use on CNN to refer to three or four Islamic guys who knew each other. Don't go there.

All these "loner, psychiatric problems, blah blah blah" guys have support systems. McVeigh had Nichols and who knows how many more. The government was simply not interested in finding the whole bunch because he was white and right wing.

I will be delighted if they start pulling fibers of the web and start to find the big, fat spiders sitting in the middle of it. It's long overdue.

Wasn't the Oklahoma City bombing during Bill Clinton's administration?

Clinton was a typical white southern conservative in very many ways. I doubt his DOJ was particularly interested in busting McVeigh's buddies at Elohim City and elsewhere.

Branch Davidian situation was cited as the impetus for the attack. How is it you claim Clinton just brushed it off? It was practically aimed at him personally.

I'm no fan of the Clintons (albeit Hillary less than Bill) but your post strikes me as absurd.

Once they'd nabbed McVeigh and Nichols, they thought the threat was over, so why pursue it?

Big mistake.

But if dad knew about the felony drug charge he had, dad committed a felony as well.

Did he know he was going to use the money to buy a gun? And if so, did he know why he wanted a gun?

for his 21st birthday. He didn't let him take it right away though. I doubt he knew his specific plans, but surely he knew he was a racist. Nevertheless, Dylann was an unemployed 9th grade dropout. Why dad thought giving him a 45 caliber gun was a good idea is beyond me.

I'd like to see her "dream wedding" GoFundMe money spent on cigarettes in Federal prison.
