Cuba has become the first country in the world to eliminate mother-to-child transmission of HIV and syphilis, the World Health Organisation has said.
"This is a major victory in our long fight against HIV and sexually transmitted infections, and an important step towards having an AIDS-free generation."
Universal health coverage, improved access to tests and increased attention to maternal care were credited with the success, defined by health authorities as fewer than 50 cases of mother-to-child transmission of syphilis or HIV per 100,000 live births.
Health authorities have been working in Cuba since 2010 to "ensure early access to prenatal care, HIV and syphilis testing for both pregnant women and their partners, treatment for women who test positive and their babies, caesarean deliveries and substitution of breastfeeding," said a WHO statement.
"Cuba's success demonstrates that universal access and universal health coverage are feasible and indeed are the key to success, even against challenges as daunting as HIV," said PAHO Director Carissa Etienne.

(1,591 posts)Statistically speaking unemployment is down to the lowest range is 30 years, is that good enough for you to believe it's factual related the number of people not working?

(1,591 posts)Are you saying you believe the unemployment number factualy represents the number of people employed ? that's a yes or no question to what you believe.
"Science", it's more than a word, it's a method. A news article is not science if has no scientific basis, only statistical analysis. The proof is in your response "Their statement" is not "science".
Castro being as asshole is irrelevant, that's called a "smokescreen" to cloud unclear propaganda with personal emotion.
No, read it again, it's statistics. The science would be "how" it was accomplished and a study that can reviewed.
" we reduced AIDS transferred births " is not "science", it's propaganda.

If the cooling trend that is actually going on, instead of the "predicted" heating of the earth continues, then the oceans will lower as the polar ice grows. Don't take my word for it, look it up, the earth has cooled, not warmed over the last few decades. But you can't talk about the truth, because "global warming / climate change" has been so heavily invested in, and bought into.
"we reduced AIDS transferred births" is not propaganda, it's a verifiable and falsifiable claim which one can check against actual data.
If the data say AIDS transmission from mother to fetus has been reduced to practically zero in Cuba, that pretty much means they have in fact succeeded in ending AIDS transmission from mother to fetus.
HIV and syphilis testing for pregnant women and their partners, caesarean deliveries and substitution of breastfeeding have also contributed to the breaking of the infection chain, said the WHO.
Carissa Etienne, the director of the Pan American Health Organisation, which partnered with the WHO on the initiative, said: Cubas achievement today provides inspiration for other countries to advance towards elimination of mother-to-child transmission of HIV and syphilis.
It is estimated that each year 1.4 million women living with HIV become pregnant. Untreated they have a 15-45% chance of transmitting the virus during pregnancy, labour or breastfeeding. The risk drops to just over 1% if the mother and baby are treated with antiretrovirals.
Globally, more than 35 million adults and children are living with HIV but the infection rate has slowed significantly, with 2.1 million becoming HIV positive in 2013, down from 2.9 million in 2005, according to UNAids data.
Scientists have said eradicating Aids is feasible if HIV prevention continues to grow, even if there is no cure. The reduction in infection rates in Cuba is seen as a major breakthrough in the campaign to rid the world of the virus.
Incidence of syphilis transmission is close behind with 1 million pregnant woman worldwide infected. This can be eliminated with simple treatments such as penicillin during pregnancy.
In 2013, only two babies were born with HIV in Cuba, and only five born with congenital syphilis.

(1,591 posts)you can obviously use your computer.
Look up "science" and relate that definition to the word "reported"
I assume you are of the mind to believe the unemployment % is a correct and factual representation of the number of people not working. I don't think you understand the differences between "science" and "statistical reporting" and the greatest one " estimated" .
Take care, you've read a piece of "reporting", and have taken it as "science". Snap your fingers and you can reduce testicular cancer by 95% if you report the data correctly.
but it still won't make it science.
I can't deny climate change, it killed me a few years back, the last time the "tipping point" was passed in order to off shore more industry,.......... so we can pretend we are more earth friendly. If only I was a famous politician with half dozen mansions and a private jet, then you would listen to me as I tell you that amount of energy you waste is disgusting and ruining the planet.
Shit I might even win a nobel prize as I create more carbon emissions in a day lecturing you, than you do in a month.

You seem to be contesting the reported results and WHO conclusions without any factual basis.
Kind of like you suggest that the BLS numbers are some kind of conspiracy to mislead the public, and go on rightwing rants about Al Gore while sneering at the idea that climate change is a problem.

anti-science crankwankitude from someone purporting to be concerned about science, while projectile vomiting rightwing talking points.
Not only are you parroting the Koch Brothers lies about client change, you're also peddling the conspiracy theory that the Bureau of Labor Statistics is hoodwinking people by publishing the same metrics it's published over the past 50 years. This is a popular one on the rightwing, has been since Nixon sent his thugs to the BLS to "count jews" because he thought they were being rigged.
Unemployment data are data. They are not propaganda, they are data. What meaning one ascribes to them is interpretation. People drawing questionable conclusions from the data is not the same thing as the data being falsified or misleading. The data is what it is.
The planet is warming. FACT. You are a liar when you say it is cooling. If you really want me to show you the links, I will, but no doubt you have something from 2013 published by Americans for Prosperity or something to back you up. Which of course is totally reliable in your eyes.
And here you are denying that the WHO knows what they're talking about regarding a 5 year project they sponsored, because . . . whatever the hell you're chattering and babbling about.
