Though the speech follows President Obamas recent announcement that he personally supports gay marriage, Romney will largely steer clear of the issue and religion and focus instead on the value of family, hard work and commitment, according to excerpts from his speech.
The excerpts from the keynote address at the Lynchburg, Va., school, founded by Baptist and TV evangelist Jerry Falwell, suggest Romney also intends to appeal to the graduating class along with their families and others by sticking to the argument that he is the best candidate to improve the economy
For you and so many young Americans, our current troubles can be discouraging, Romney, the former Massachusetts governor, says in prepared remarks. Millions wait on the day when there are jobs for everyone willing to work, and opportunities to match your hopes and your goals. But don't lose heart, because that day is coming.
The best cultural assets are values as basic as personal responsibility, the dignity of hard work, and, above all, the commitments of family, Romney also says in the prepared remarks. Take those away, or take them for granted, and so many things can go wrong in a life. Keep them strong, and so many things will go right.
