Bernie: He's not an Obama. He's the Real Deal

We have a real Hope for Change in voting for Bernie.

Obama was pretty much an unknown. Bernie Sanders has a long history of fighting for Change and Hope for everyman.

He is in it to win, and win we will.

Thou, O king, sawest, and behold a great image. This great image, whose brightness was excellent, stood before thee; and the form thereof was terrible.
This image's head was of fine gold, his breast and his arms of silver, his belly and his thighs of brass,
His legs of iron, his feet part of iron and part of clay. (Daniel 2:31-33)
...
And whereas thou sawest the feet and toes, part of potters' clay, and part of iron, the kingdom shall be divided; but there shall be in it of the strength of the iron, forasmuch as thou sawest the iron mixed with miry clay.
And as the toes of the feet were part of iron, and part of clay, so the kingdom shall be partly strong, and partly broken.
And whereas thou sawest iron mixed with miry clay, they shall mingle themselves with the seed of men: but they shall not cleave one to another, even as iron is not mixed with clay. (Daniel 2:41-43)

The more candidates for the House and Senate are asked about Bernie's agenda, the more they will realize that is the path to victory.

Also, I believe it is Bernie's plan to bring the popular energy into the oval office by keeping the public involved unlike what happened in 2009.

Had Congress stayed Democratic, much more could have been done. There was really nothing much different/wrong about President Obama's policy ideas or what he supported. He really just didn't have much to work with post-2010. The 2010 and 2014 midterms during his Presidency ruined a lot of opportunities to get more progressive stuff done. Bernie nor anybody else will be able to get much done if obstructionist Republicans remain in charge of one or both Houses of Congress.

Obama never did that.

Also, he's not going to go into the negotiations offering the Cons almost all of what they want from the get go, which Obama did.

Bernie is a fighter, he is COMPLETELY on the people's side and he's not going to play footsie with the other side. And you can bet they know he won't so they aren't going to be able to play around as they have been. Of course they will try, but Bernie isn't going to appease them or think he can work with them. He'll get the people riled up and the Cons will have to do something because the people will demand it. Obama squandered the energy of the people that he had when he got elected and sworn in. He stopped rallying them and they went home. He didn't listen to them, opting instead to try and work with the Cons. Big mistake. Bernie won't do that.

104. Multiple ways
Mon May 25, 2015, 08:51 PM
May 2015

1) He'll push for an agenda that works for the citizens, not the corporations. How much he can get done without congress is questionable. But the same holds true for any president. Pressure from common citizens will play a major role in this one.

2) He'll use the bully pulpit. He's been doing this for decades, but as president it will carry much more weight. This is independent of congress and one area president Obama has been lacking IMO (at least until the TPP). This will have a large effect on down ticket races and the all important 2020 (next census election, also a presidential election unlike 2010). If we want to reverse gerrymandering then we had better have people fired up for that election. I don't believe anyone does that better than 4 years under Bernie going for reelection.

3) He'll appoint people to the cabinets and head of agencies who work in our interests, not a bunch of corporate cronies. Unless congress blocks every single one of his appointments (which would be killer to them) this one is totally on the president to choose. This is an area president Obama has failed miserably, IMO, and I don't expect any better out of Hillary based on past associations and who she's hiring to run her campaigns. This will probably have the largest effect on our day to day lives from his presidency.

4) He'll appoint supreme court and judicial judges who aren't bought by corporations. It'll be a fight for him to get them through. However it'll be a fight for any Democratic president to get them through. Retaking the senate would go a long way on this one (with filibuster changes on lower judicial appointments). The good news is early polling favors us retaking seats in the senate.

5) He won't compromise on legislation that harms us. This is the one area where having Bernie will be most effective. He will block any corporate bill that isn't in the greater good of the people. It would require a super majority in congress to override him. So the absolute floor of expectations under Bernie is things won't get worse for us. If nothing else he'll stalemate the corporate agenda.

I guess cutting Obama and Clinton off at the knees does make Bernie Sanders appear taller. No one's ever thought of that campaign strategy for a weak candidate before.

You're a natural at opposition research, so perhaps you want to try your hand at misdirection by telling how you see Bernie Sanders as the shoe-in front runner. After all, the country has a history of voting for the candidate who stood furthest to the left.

I recall my first vote, for McGovern in '72, and later Kucinich with his Dept Of Peace in 2008, when America voted for their landslides. Other than them, they've all been just like republicans if you ignore all the good they do.

The Low Road

What can they do
to you? Whatever they want.
They can set you up, they can
bust you, they can break
your fingers, they can
burn your brain with electricity,
blur you with drugs till you
can't walk, can't remember, they can
take your child, wall up
your lover. They can do anything
you can't stop them
from doing. How can you stop
them? Alone, you can fight,
you can refuse, you can
take what revenge you can
but they roll over you.

But two people fighting
back to back can cut through
a mob, a snake-dancing file
can break a cordon, an army
can meet an army.

Two people can keep each other
sane, can give support, conviction,
love, massage, hope, sex.
Three people are a delegation,
a committee, a wedge. With four
you can play bridge and start
an organization. With six
you can rent a whole house,
eat pie for dinner with no
seconds, and hold a fund raising party.
A dozen make a demonstration.
A hundred fill a hall.
A thousand have solidarity and your own newsletter;
ten thousand, power and your own paper;
a hundred thousand, your own media;
ten million, your own country.

It goes on one at a time,
it starts when you care
to act, it starts when you do
it again and they said no,
it starts when you say We
and know you who you mean, and each
day you mean one more.

He's not a puppet of the corrupt machine.

Sounds kind of like Bernie. Maybe it's a trend, because the Southern European Left Populous come back wasn't expected, either.

He told people everything they wanted to hear. He promised, one of many, that he would re-open the NAFTA trade agreement and negotiate items that was "stealing" American Jobs. (of course this didn't happen)
Obama served in the ILL. state legislature, Served as US Senator for 3 years and then started those well scripted speeches that fooled the Democrats into voting for him for POTUS.
And he fooled us twice. He gave the same speeches in 2012 and we voted for this corporatist again.

So you are correct Sanders is certainly no Obama

64. Big difference btw Obama and Sanders

Obama stepped in to the Presidential race with a year's planning, lining up financial and political support, and while he refused contributions by lobbyists, he had no objection to taking money from 1%ers. I see no sign that Sanders will have anywhere close to the same financial support (complain all you want about "the money primary"; this is the political system we have to day) or some innovative method of running a national campaign on a shoestring.

The revolution will not be televised, it will only report the outcome.

And Bernie will be leading the revolution and Hillary will just be a bad memory by June of 2016.

I'm getting really weary of these posts, beatifying Mr. Sanders. You want to support him, vote for him? Fair enough, I have no problem with that. But spare us the worshipful tones, OK? It's way too much like the 1972 McGovern campaign.

This is the difference between representative government working for citizens, and corporate rule that has contempt for them.

Propaganda is a base, dishonest occupation. It requires a special kind of moral bankruptcy to choose to participate in this vile, manipulative dishonesty, this sellout of human beings and democracy itself.

71. You're right. He's not an Obama.

And that's why he's going to have a very hard time becoming the Democratic nominee. Like Obama, he's pretty much an unknown, but there the resemblance ends. Both were Senators, though. One was a Democratic Senator and the other is an Independent/Democratic Socialist Senator.

One spoke at the 2004 Democratic Convention and made a great impression on people. The other did not speak at any Democratic Convention, and is known pretty much only in his own state, one of the states with the lowest population in the country.

Both have had some great ideas. One managed to get several of those put in place, despite a hostile Congress. The other has not had great success getting his own ideas through the Senate, but has voted with the Democrats on most issues.

One mobilized a demographic that normally didn't turn out for elections, energizing a community that he uniquely represented. The other, we're not sure of in terms of turning out masses of voters to win primaries. He might turn out people, but perhaps not in numbers high enough to overcome a popular Democratic opponent, who also represents an under-represented demographic group, and has high popularity among blacks and Hispanics, as did Obama.

One will not be running in the 2016 primaries. He's already in his second term in the White House, and cannot run again. At some point, Obama, who is still very popular, will endorse a candidate. There's no uncertainty who that candidate will be, and that candidate will gain many votes from than endorsement. The other will not be endorsed by most extremely influential current office holders. That could make a real difference in the primary elections.

Senator Sanders will have me supporting him in Minnesota's caucus and convention system. President Obama had that support as well, in 2008 and 2012. So they have that in common. How important that will be in Minnesota, though, is not clear. Hillary Clinton enjoys high popularity in Minnesota among likely primary voters and caucus-goers. She will likely prevail in Minnesota.

You are correct. Bernie Sanders is not an Obama. That will probably prove to be a drawback in his primary candidacy. Barack Obama won because he is an Obama. His dynamism, relative youth, and skills as a speaker, along with many other factors, led him to two nominations and two elections as President. Being an Obama is a big plus when you're running for national office. It's not a good think that Senator Sanders is so different from Obama. It's something to overcome, if he can.

They are out there and they've been held in silence or pushed back (for many "loyalty" reasons) since Obama started his run for Presidency.

We shall see how it turns out. But, those who have not have a voice for a very long time and those who learned in the last decade or so that their voice wasn't being heard, or the courtesy of even recognized, are now standing up.

I was surprised to see you vote for Bernie in the latest DU "Straw Pole." Are you, now, one of those now speaking out, also?

Senator Sanders supporters are mostly about policy and what the candidates history has shown them to be.

People who don't want their works criticized, should stay far away from political office. None are immune, including your "idols."
