They act like now that gays can get married it will some how ruin heterosexual marriage.
How?
It amazes me that Britney Spears married her friend in Vegas and then got it annulled 55 hours later! That was LEGAL!!! Talk about the sanctity of marriage!
This whole topic is unbelievable!

(115,947 posts)How on earth does the marriage of a same-sex couple affect in any way anybody else's marriage? OK, a guy marries another guy. That means - OH, NO! - that neither of those guys is going to be available to marry me (a straight woman)! Well, duh. Neither of them was going to marry me anyhow, because they're gay! Preventing gay people from getting married doesn't mean they will stop being gay, and allowing them to get married like everybody else (and suffer shitty divorces like everybody else) will not prevent straight people from being straight or marrying each other. I don't get it at all.

Blacks got rights and threatened their specialness.
This is what's left. They know they're not special on merits - their self esteem depends upon keeping others from having what they have. Pitiful really.

(4,876 posts)Why is it that the people who say "I believe marriage should be between a man and a woman" think that anyone gives a shit what they think and why do they think that because they believe that that everyone in the country should follow their beliefs.
And why does the media not ask these fucking questions?

(82,383 posts)That really does clear it up for me. I was confused about it, had something to do with society following their rules, which they can't have if people can legally do otherwise. It's that system that is harmed. The one where the men at the top control everything.

(2,682 posts)why anyone would think it's their business anyway. In the six houses on my street there are a variety of living situations. I have NEVER asked my neighbors their marital status or their sexual preference, nor do I care. If there is a married gay couple, it effects me NONE! On the greater scale, if a government is willing to allow certain rights and privileges to people who form a family unit, it doesn't matter who, how or why they form a family unit -- all family units should be treated the same. OR, there should be no rights or privileges for ANY family unit. We as a society like to pretend that we don't discriminate. We have made some progress. Marital equality is another step to achieve our national goal.

(2,577 posts)Gay marriage hurts heterosexual marriage by ... umm, err, uhhh .... hmmmm.
Let me think some more. It hurts heterosexual marriage by ... uhhh ... no, that's not it. Maybe because ... nahhh.
Let me think about heterosexual marriages that I have known to fail ... hmmm ... usually involves one partner having sex with a different heterosexual partner.
Gay marriage hurts heterosexual marriage because right-wing tools say so. They don't need no stinkin' logic and no stinkin' evidence.
And I for one am ALWAYS grateful to have such bastions of the traditonal family as Newt Gingrich and Rush Limbaugh defend the sanctity of marriage.

President Obama made his big announcement this afternoon that he supports marriage equality and it's now 11:13 pm and my marriage to my wife is still fully intact. Having heard how marriage equality would destroy heterosexual marriage for years and years, I was concerned.

(53,475 posts)This is the "explanation" I got from someone who voted NO in NC yesterday.
I had posited that the motive was "hate". He said, no, it's "greed".
See, there's this "marriage pie", and if gays are allowed to marry, straights will get a smaller piece of that pie. That's right. See, couples that marry get benefits like being able to file joint returns, reducing their tax liability. When gays marry and get that benefit, it takes away from everyone else. "It's greed", he said.
He said one of his loved ones who "has many gay friends" voted for the ban because his own tax liability would then be smaller.
Now I'd never previously heard of the "marriage pie" and I would imagine that any savings taxpayers get by not allowing gays to file their tax returns jointly must be incredibly tiny. Who would sell out the civil rights of their "friends" for a dollar or two?
Bigots and hateful people, that's who. Like I said, I'd never heard of the "marriage pie", but I've sure heard a lot of hate speech.

(25,415 posts)We have a high divorce rate, people cheating on each other left and right and nasty divorces. We have single parents doing everything because one parent is lazy and one step up and have any responsibility to their children. Gay people did not cause any of that. It just makes me laugh when RW-ers try and use that "logic".

(5,420 posts)legalizing what they hate themselves for secretly desiring, erases one of their minds reasons to not acknowledge their secret desire?
so if all of the homophobic (seems highly tilted to repugs) people who secretly desire a gay relationship, making it legal could mean the breakup of their traditional marriages as they all run off to join "the gay"
you know, since it's legal and all.
Yes, I know that's bullshit, but it makes as much sense as any other reason they can come up with.

(17,230 posts)The overwhelming opposition to gay marriage comes from people who like to think of themselves as "conservative Christians." To these people, marriage is a sacrament rooted in the deepest principles of their faith, and is intended for one purpose: the procreation of children. Gay marriage does not, therefore, attack heterosexual marriage, but the very roots of their religion.
As said upthread, don't expect rationality from fanatics.
