Does it matter? I think so in terms of framing the argument and because "gay marriage" sets it apart, makes it seem different. And it's not different, it's exactly the same. That's the point: Equality. We need to use that word within this context. It's positive rhetoric and it's accurate and it doesn't set the GLBT community is some space marked "other".
edited to change title and add a word or two.

(2,322 posts)This is about civil rights, not gay rights. And it's about time we started framing the argument rather than letting others frame it to seem like someone is seeking a special privilege. Let's get aggressive in making sure it's given the right name.

(114,904 posts)I think this is the third time I've written essentially the same OP. I felt a bit sheepish about posting it today, but I do think it's important.

(53,339 posts)"Gay rights" framing only serves the RW "special" rights meme. Equality is a civil rights issue.

(550 posts)Marriage equality falls under the larger umbrella. Equality for all marriages, equality for all races, equality for all genders. This country was founded to escape the old world mentality, the conservatism of it all. As a nation founded on forward thinking, it's a shame that we're fighting ourselves so hard to prevent the most basic tenet of progressive thinking: equality. Doesn't matter if you're a man looking to marry the man you love, or an Asian woman hoping to make something of her life and be treated equally (both paywise or respectwise) in the workplace.
This hurdle will be a huge victory, and a step in the right direction.
Personally, I can't wait to go to a wedding after this happens (whenever it does). It'll have a whole different feel, don't you think?

(169 posts)Words can make or break people's perceptions. Check out the video in this article; a preacher (ok, that shocked the daylights out of me) talks about this quite eloquently. It's about not distinguishing between people when it comes to equal protection and rights under the law.
