DSCC Executive Director Guy Cecil issued a memo Wednesday morning suggesting that Indiana Senate nominee Richard Mourdock would be the next Ken Buck, the tea party nominee in Colorado in 2010 whose extreme positions cost him his Senate race. By defeating Dick Lugar and nominating Richard Mourdock, the Tea Party has done it again, handing another strong pick-up opportunity to Democrats, the memo reads. The memo outlines areas where Democrats think Mourdock is too extreme, making him vulnerable even though hes a Republican in a red state:
Mourdock spent $2 million of taxpayer money on a lawsuit that could have endangered 124,000 Indiana jobs including 4,000 high paying jobs in Kokomo, Indiana by killing the Chryslers bankruptcy restructuring. Mourdock called the lawsuit his Rosa Parks moment. Mourdocks Tea Party opposition to the entire auto industry rescue could have cost the state 140,000 jobs in total. In his defense, Mourdock says, I didnt take a pledge that I would support every job in Indiana under whatever means it takes to do it. Mourdock says that I think there needs to be more partisanship in Washington. Mourdock has questioned the constitutionality of Social Security and Medicare.
It concludes: Last nights results make Indiana a prime pick up opportunity for Democrats. There are a lot of longtime Lugar supporters waking up this morning and looking for a mainstream moderate. Richard Mourdocks ideological extremism doesnt fit the bill. Joe Donnelly does.

(11,366 posts)As in "Dick Lugar" style. I don't think a good chunk of the state gets into this loony tunes Tealiban idiocy too much.
I, for one, hope the Tealiban-controlled GOP keeps over-reaching.

(10,437 posts)I presume they are not seriously thinking a Dem would win a statewide race in IN. That 08 anomaly really turned some brains if so.

(11,366 posts)Granted, Evan was/is a blue-dog, but so is the Democrat who is running this year. Blue dogs still hunt in Indiana.

(10,437 posts)Not going to happen. I'd happily wager on that.
Evan Bayh won his last election with 300,000 more votes than Lugar: 1.4 million vs. 1.1 million, respectively.
Defeating the lunatic Mourdock is possible.

(82,849 posts)And, if nothing else, it will cause the RSCC to spend some money in Indiana that they hadn't planned to spend on Lugar defending his "safe" seat. That's money they won't have for spending in other states.
