I mean, this is Jesse Helm's state, for crying out loud.
He's dead, but his people are still in power and are still majority voters.

(52,589 posts)Democrats are the largest political party. Republicans haven't held the legislature since reconstruction until 2010. Polling put the overall population as favoring same sex marriage or civil unions at 53%.

Now Prop 8 on November of 2008, that was shocking, until you look a what proponents ran.
