Here we have yet another mom wanting her 5 minutes of fame. This one is falsely claiming her son was suspended from school. Every spring there are a bunch of these stories. Angry parent (usually a mom) goes to the media with a dramatic (usually exaggerated) story.
And no, the school is not completely innocent here. There's nothing wrong with this child's hair. In fact, this hair cut is popular in the military. Whoever said ANYTHING to this child needs to learn to respect his right to do whatever he and his family want to do with his hair. Perhaps the school will now learn something about silly dress codes. Kids come to school to learn, not to satisfy the adults' sense of acceptable fashion.
A mom in Hays says her son was suspended for three days because of his hair cut and now she wants to district to take a closer look at its dress code policy.
Six-year-old Xavier loves playing with his cars and his friends, typical six year old stuff. And he also loves having his hair, a little bit different.
"That's what we are supposed to be teaching our children," said his mother Ashley Fay. "To not be the same as everyone else"
But his mom says standing out got her first grader suspended from Roosevelt Elementary school for three days.

The school couldn't comment specifically on this mom's claim, but the(y) insist they have not suspended any students for dress code violations. But they say whether a student is in compliance with the dress code is something that is open to interpretation.

(9,902 posts)If we all just sat back and never fought for what we thought was right, where would we be now? Should blacks just have sat back and followed the rules? How about women, or GBLT's?
I don't think that fighting for what one thinks is right will make them an "obnoxious ass" - I think it will teach the child that one needs to stand up for what they believe in, even if it's something simple like a hair cut.

(96,793 posts)That's a bit more extreme than just breaking an unjust rule.

(9,902 posts)she says they suspended him, the school says they didn't...was it a lie, I don't know. A mis- communication somewhere? Possibly.

(26,180 posts)And I tend believe them. They are not legally allowed to discuss the boy's suspension with the press.
This is also a usual cut for small boys who live around military bases.

(20,277 posts)Why would the mom make this up? I read the story again, and something is a bit fishy here.

(96,793 posts)But that's no reason for the mom to lie.

(22,298 posts)All the boys had buzz cuts when I was in elementary school, even my brothers. I didn't see a boy with hair longer than a buzz cut until junior high.
edit: Looks like this kid has what's called a "faux-hawk," which I think is a stupid hairstyle, but not one to cause all this kerfuffle.
