Mitt Romney Grilled About His Taxes At Town Hall Event
by Andrew Kirell | 5:03 pm, May 7th, 2012
At a town hall event Monday in Cleveland, Ohio, presumptive Republican nominee Mitt Romney faced some tough questions from the audience regarding his taxes and how he would handle the federal governments spending problems. On his MSNBC program, Martin Bashir aired a few of the questions to illustrate what he sees as Romney running into trouble whenever things go off-script.
One seemingly angry attendee asked Romney to explain how during an age of tough foreign competition:
UNIDENTIFIED MAN: You took over $1.5 million in foreign tax credits in ten years. Appreciate your comment.
ROMNEY: Ha ha ha. Ill look at it.
Bashir edited the clip after that short response. But as the crowd booed, Romney did go on to say, Im not familiar with that [...] I didnt think I paid any foreign income taxes, but Ill be happy to take a look at it.

(21,786 posts)he paid tax on income from foreign investments, which was taxed at the source; the US has double taxation treaties with most countries that ensure that such foreign income, taxed at the source, is not double taxed but allowed a tax credit on US income tax returns. It's simply how the system works. I don't care much for Romney, but this isn't an issue.

(52,489 posts)actually, the "i didn't think i paid any foreign income taxes" is really problematic. he obviously knows he's stashed a ton of funds outside the u.s., and they're all earning more money.
could he really think he's never paid any income taxes outside the u.s.? does he think his tax dodges dodge taxes EVERYWHERE?
the truth is, "i'll take a look at it" is inartful politician-speak for "hey, i don't want to talk about that. it's not a point in my favor and i haven't formulated a politically creative defense to that yet; i'll ignore you and have my speechwriter come up with something in case the press decided to dog me on that question."
