(3,978 posts)Christianity ushered in the dark ages. If Islam had its way we still would be in the dark ages. The Renaissance broke the chains of religion and brought back the importance of elightened human beings that care about the here and now. A life unexamined isn't worth living.

(6,238 posts)and some Christians are still fighting against it. I'm sorry, but I do not believe there is anything inherently worse in Islam than there is in Christianity. As for the dark ages, Islamic civilization was a beacon of knowledge in the dark ages, and in some cases even tolerance. Spain was a more tolerant place under the Muslims than it was after they were defeated.

(6,238 posts)Neither is any better or worse than the other. Both have done horrible things in the past and will likely do horrible things in the future. Is Islam particularly brutal right now? Yes, but to blame that on something inherent in Islam itself is the wrong thing to do. As I've said before, Fundamentalism never arises in a vacuum it is a (wrong) response to oppression.

white_wolf
(6,238 posts)You'll be hard pressed to find anything more violent and brutal. It is more moderate now, because it is forced to be. However, let some of these preachers take power and see how fast we turn into something like Kuwait. Furthermore, the spread of Islamic fundamentalism is a direct result of imperialism in the Islamic world.

(6,238 posts)84% of the country are Christians and they are making homosexuality a capital offense. Oh, and guess what, the group that is helping push this bill is the American Christian organization, the Family.

(5,957 posts)It already is a capital offense in many Islamic countries.

(6,238 posts)I'm trying to point out that Christianity can be just as dangerous as Islam and Uganda and the Family are proving it. I swear, when did DU get some many Islamophobes? I suppose you think they hate us for our "freedom", don't you?
badtoworse
(5,957 posts)My opinions about the "Religion of Peace" are based on what millions of its followers are doing around the world today.
Your opinions about Christianity are based on what some obscure fringe group is doing. You need to do a whole lot better than that if you want to make the case that Christianity is just as dangerous as Islam.
white_wolf
(6,238 posts)Historically Christianity has been just as bad as Islam. The Bible's stance on homosexuality is just as bad as the Quran's, but I'm betting you've never studied anything about Islam. If you did, you might learn something, but I know I'm asking too much of you. I swear you sound just like Rick Santorum "they hate us for our freedom" "Islam is evil" Grow up and read a book, until you do I'm done.
badtoworse
(5,957 posts)Christians stopped doing that about 2,000 years ago. You need to look at what is ACTUALLY HAPPENING in the two religions today and deal with that. The books were written thousands of years ago.

(23,272 posts)This story from Kuwait IS fucked up and saying so does not make DUers bigots.
And bringing up Uganda is only demonstrating your own myopic ignorance. Many, many Christians and Christian organizations have condemned this piece of legislation that has been brought by ONE Ugandan legislator.

Your analogy is ridiculous.
white_wolf
(6,238 posts)84% of the people are Christians and they are trying to make homosexuality a capital offense. Secondly, the bill is being pushed by the Family. A very powerful American Christian group with ties to both major parties.

(5,957 posts)"Several Christian organisations oppose it, including the Roman Catholic Church, the Anglican Church of Canada, Integrity Uganda, Exodus International, Accepting Evangelicals, Changing Attitude, Courage, Ekklesia, Fulcrum, Inclusive Church and the Lesbian and Gay Christian Movement. Exodus International sent a letter to President Museveni stating, "The Christian church ... must be permitted to extend the love and compassion of Christ to all. We believe that this legislation would make this mission a difficult if not impossible task to carry out."[60] A group of U.S. Christian leaders have released a statement to Uganda about the bill, one of these leaders being Thomas Patrick Melady, former U.S. Ambassador to Uganda.[61] The Anglican Reverend Canon Gideon Byamugisha said that the Bill "would become state-legislated genocide".[62]"
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Uganda_Anti-Homosexuality_Bill
The bill was introduced by a legislator (NOT a religious organization) and apparently supported by a handful of Evangical "Christians". Based on that, you're broad-brushing millions of Christians who are appalled at the idea. Again, ridiculous.
BTW, the bill failed.

(6,238 posts)Is Islam worse than Christianity right now? Yes, that can't be argued. However, I think people are making a mistake by blaming these problems on Islam itself. I don't think there is anything inherent in Islam that lends itself to this kind of behavior anymore than Christianity does. Most of the countries that have these problems with Islam also have problems with poverty, warfare, and oppressive governments. I think those three things likely have more of an impact than anything to do with Islam itself.
